Kind of fuzzy picture, but I would guess lambs quarters (Chenopodium album). It is a native angiosperm (depending on who you ask... USDA says it's both native and introduced, whatever that means), so "technically" it could be considered a wildflower, lol, but, it didn't come from your purchased seeds, it is a common weed ;).

Yes, ultra-common annual weed. It can be eaten as a salad green in spring. Would likely be rather bitter this time of year.

Zach, quite few plants have both native and introduced cohorts. Think such invasive monsters as Phragmites and reed canary grass.......both species are both native and introduced, with the introduced genotypes being the ones thought to be causing all the problems.....or the hybrids of these introductions with their native counterparts.

They are good for building compost.

Tom, I can understand something being native to one part of the continent but introduced in another... But with many "circumpolar" species, I imagine it would be nigh on impossible to determine the actual historic range vs. the spread through human activity. And that's exactly what USDA says about reed canary grass. Overall, it is generally accepted as native to North America, I generally got the feeling from their write-up that publications stating otherwise are outdated.

Yeah, that's not too far from my own take on the subject. Let's face it, the early pioneers were not focused on such issues and by now, it's just an avalanche of genetic mishmash. I find it most disheartening that farmers up here can and do still plant RCG! Wha? I can give them many hay wagons full of that stuff!

Not too dissimilar to the cattails conundrum: We here in the north have Typha latifolia as a well-documented native plant. Then along came the more southern type-T. angustifolia...and still later, their hybrid-T. domingensis....and all three can be observed growing next to each other. I happen to really like latifolia with it's nice broad leaves and great color, but those other two are thugs to an extreme degree. So, we build these stormwater ponds with a "safety shelf" of perhaps ten-foot width where emergent aquatic species are planted. We really want to see two or three species of bulrush, perhaps some arrowhead, some pickerel weed, some blue flag iris, etc. But if you've got the non-native cattails present, soon you will have just cattails. I hate that, and this is actually happening up at my wildlife pond as well. But the point is, these genetic strains and species are well understood, but over time, who knows? As they continue to easily hybridize with one another, will we be able to discriminate into the future?

Of course, now that Phragmites (haha, yet another with both native and introduced geneotypes present) is so on the scene, we will soon cease to worry about cattails, purple loosestrife, et al.
