I would think there would be something on the container that would provide the advice you need. Alternatively call the company and tell them what happened - I'm sure they will be helpful --- good luck :)

It's gone in a few months. It is short-lived in the environment. Although plants do absorb some you'd probably do well to just wash your veggies before eating. It doesn't bioaccumulate in plants or in people. In any case, in small quantities it doesn't seem to pose any significant health risk. It is approved for many crops in the U.S. so you're probably already eating small amounts of it.

I'd scold your husband, and move on. Don't take a bath in the stuff.

Concur: Carbaryl (Sevin) is very short lived. One day waiting period for most vegetables. Pretty low toxicity. Similar to aspirin.

BTW - Sevin will not do anything for tree diseases. It kills pests, not diseases. It also kills bees. Bad news for your peas and beans.

There is the big problem with people using chemicals. Sevin is an insecticide and you should read label before buying or using. And I see people applying chemicals not properly dressed for using chemicals. I see people using roundup dressed in swimming trunks and flip flops. I wouldn't be worried about sevin on veggies, but I would be concerned about your husband fight diseases with an insecticide.

That's a fair point. When USDA sends workers out to spray carbaryl (eliminating pests such as bark beetles, and such) they are dressed up the kazoo in protective wear. Helmets, wrap-around slickers, etc. If you don't do that, you are basically taking a bath in the stuff. It's not particularly carcinogenic, but it is a strong irritant. If he wasn't dressed in protective wear, he's better get in the shower asap.

I'll give her husband benefit of the doubt and assume he really didn't intend to use Sevin for disease control but as the insecticide that it is. But he should at least have checked the wind for drift issues as it could easily have been a neighbor's garden that got dumped on rather than his own. A lot of damage has been done to neighbor gardens by unthinking applications of chemicals.

Ultimately it is your choice to eat the vegetables that got dusted or not. Sevin is a very controversial chemical, even when used appropriately. So while many wouldn't think twice about eating them and routinely do, others wouldn't touch them for any reason. But it is your comfort level that counts.

If you're spraying a lot of Sevin anywhere around the house, it's going to get all over everything. Everything you touch outside will be coated with it, long before it degrades. So not eating veggies from a bed in a long-ago sprayed-upon lot is probably not much more than a feel-good action. It's going to get in you one way or another. If you don't want to get Sevin in you, then I wouldn't be spraying it on trees around you.

Seems to me you two need to get on the same page. Why would a guy think it's ok to spray any chemical when his wife is growing vegetables? I'd be totally livid. I grow organic vegetables, I do not want any chemical anywhere near my garden...who wants to eat that?

Probably because he thinks that Sevin is pretty innocuous stuff. In many respects, it is. But getting on the same page is smart.

I use sevin (when needed) in my garden and haven't noticed any ill effects and I've used it for years.

Many things happen without us 'noticing' them. That we failed to notice them does not mean they didn't happen.

That's a fact. Lots and lots of people use Sevin and don't obviously die or get sick from it. But it is also true that lots of people die and get sick, and they're really not sure why.

I will use Sevin only when it is appropriate and well thought out and it has saved my plants on a few occasions, early in the season when the pests are high and the beneficials and pollinators (and edible fruit for that matter) are MIA, and it is one of the more benign things you can spray in your garden. It is only when it is sprayed profilactically and without any consideration that it deserves some of the extreme stigma it gets. Many who stigmatize Sevin then go on to douse their tomato plants -- and tomatoes! -- in Daconil, or spray copper on a frequent basis in contradiction to the labelling, or spray pyrethrins which while considered organic are in fact chemical and have potential negative human health consequences and have even killed someone just from a single use, as well as environmental effects, etc.

Unless you are strictly organic and won't eat conventional produce, go ahead and eat your veggies, whatever you would buy in the supermarket would be far worse.
