Weber vs Kamado??

Does anyone have a Weber Performance Grill with a pizza oven? I was going to get a Kamado Joe but saw a review that said a pizza insert and pizza stone would work as well?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. We don't BBQ much except for our quarterly family gatherings (approx 25 people) and everybody is a foodie these days

I have a Napoleon grill and a BGE. I'm sure the Kamado is the same as the Egg, and the Weber the same as the Napoleon. The Napoleon sits unused most of the time. The Egg is amazing! Best low and slow, best pizza, best steak...... you get my drift. What is the difference? It is the smoke and the moisture retention. I even make a smokey potato salad that my guests rave about. I considered the pizza stone for my Gaggenau oven, but decided I already had great alternatives. And I am in Canada.... where you can easily cook year round on the Egg.

I have a pizza stone for my Gaggenau oven so I don't have either.

I would go for the Kamado or better yet the Big Green Egg.

BBQs are specialized appliances.

I like a firepit, tried grills, charcoal and gas and didn't care for either. I use a tripod or an oven rack, have a ton of cast iron cookware, also mountain pie irons and of course hot dog forks. It might take a little more time, you have to start the fire earlier to let it burn down to nice red coals but it's easy to slide food to sides for less heat and the center for more heat. Never used a lid. When I cook a whole duck or chicken I butterfly the bird then it cooks faster than whole.

Long time viewer -- first-time poster . . . I'm builing an outdoor kitchen. My focus in this post is the BBQ grill. I am replacing previous owner's nat gas grill as I do a complete renovation of this house. I will have the builder make a built-in area for the grill. I was looking at the Weber Summit S-650, as the features/quality fit the bill. I noticed on Weber's website that they make a similar, although not exact, version of this (calls S-640) for built-in installations. This model, however seems to lack the functionality on the "wings" of the grill that the portable model has. I'm wondering if my builder can just build around the S650, to preserve the functionality as well as get the built-in look. Has anyone done this?

Thank you for the input. After a lot of research I decided to go with the Grill Dome. I have read that they have wonderful customer service, an incredible product and it was nice to be able to talk with the owner himself when decided which size, color, etc. to buy. I did try to reach the Kamado people but they don't answer their phones or respond to their e-mails. Not a good sign when I'm inquiring about a purchase. Maybe they're quicker to respond to complaints, but I'm not taking a chance. Pat

I have cooked on all three and the TEK IR is the only gas grill that cooks as well as charcoal. It's advantages over charcoal are that it is quick to set up, easy to clean up and does an excellent job of creating the charcoal taste. As many here know, the flavor is created by the smoke from the fat striking the hot surface be it charcoal or something else. The higher the IR energy (from gas or charcoal) and the less the flame, the more smoke generated rather than being turned into additional flame. The TEK creates a great deal of smoke because the IR glass sits between the flame and the dripping grease. On older style IR burners there is still an open flame to ignite the grease drippings reducing the amount of smoke to add flavor. With charcoal, once the embers are glowing red, it is emitting a lot of IR and much less to no flame and hence produces a lot of smoke and flavor. I have owned the FireMagic and I would not purchase another. The burners are cast SS but they still do rust over time and the flavor grills wear out too. They are very hard to clean and the heat was not anywhere near as good as the advertisements. If you are the type that never clean a grill and don't mind a gritty looking grill it may not matter. I am the type that wants it to look clean and inviting each time and the self cleaning feature along with the dishwasher removal panels makes the TEK a breeze to clean and keep looking nice. For me that was worth a lot. The more conventional grills like the Firemagic, even with their ceramic infrared burner are not even a close match.

One inexpensive alternative to Kamado and Green Egg. Char-Griller Akorn. About $280 at Home Depot, also sold at Lowes and Walmart. Shell is insulated metal, principle and controls the same. superb at low smoking and hot charcoal grilling, and much lighter than a ceramic. Not as swank but just as functional, with some good user websites for use help and recipes. Have had one for 2 years now, going fine.

Ceramic cookers are not about swankiness but performance. Not only moisture but heat retention. Insulated metal cans don't compare. If they did there would be no market for ceramic cookers.

I agree with Deeageaux. I have a Komodo kamado and it can hold a temp for over 24hrs for smoking things like brisket. Visit the multiple forums to see what is popular and the use cases for different inserts in the cookers.

Went to Costco today. They have a BGE knockoff that is normally $599 but is on sale through 7/10/16 for $399 and comes with Costco's legendary money back warranty.

Traditionally Kamado style cookers have been among the most expensive
charcoal grills/smokers on the market. Originally made with a heavy
ceramic shell, these grills seemed fragile (though they are not with
proper care) and priced much high than the typical metal kettle grills.
The Char-Griller Akorn is a kamado style grill. It has all the fuel
efficiency, high temperature cooking abilities, and low and slow
capacity that the much more expensive units do, but at half (or even
less) the price. So what's the catch? While competently built, and more
than capable of keeping up with he competition, this model lacks the
construction quality and long term durability of those pricier other
grills. The question you have to ask is, do you buy a cheaper grill to
get into this style of grill, buy something more basic and far less
money, or go big and buy one of those ceramic grills everyone raves
about.

If you google BGE v. Akorn you'll find this pretty much sums up the hundreds of posts from real users on both sides (Amazon was helpful when first looking due to larger sample size). And in the words of the OP: "We don't BBQ much except for our quarterly family gatherings (approx 25 people) and everybody is a foodie these days." And yes, the Akorn pizza stone works fine or you can use the smoking stone for pizza. Being a foodie doesn't make one any smarter, more frugal or knowledgeable about markets than the next person.
