Another question on japanese maple!

I planted a new japanese maple in a large container. It was beautiful and happy for the first 6 weeks, (March-April). I'm in Seattle, and we saw a weird heat wave, temps in the ninties in late April early May. The maple leaves turned orange almost overnight, all curled and dry. If I touch them they come off in my hand. I noticed a neighbors 15 yearold in the ground small maple is also all crispy. My question is, is my baby maple dead? or just kind of in an early dormancy? How best to take care of it for next year?
