Naga pepper looking sad

I am a beginner pepper planter. I live in NJ I've planted 7 plants (naga, red moruga, and some mysteryears pots) in 5gallon containers. I'm certain I did something wrong possibly used the wrong soil mix (miracle grow potting and garden soil) I used fertilizer (can't remember off hand I'll put in the comments later). I've been keeping them in my indoor greenhouse until I found the time to transplant the ones that where ready. Yesterday were there first time outside, when I checked on them this morning one of my naga plants were totally wilted and sad. Another pepper plant with similar soil seemed like it was in the beginning phase of getting sad. Please help me.

Garden soil in containers is usually not a good idea as I tends to compact and choke-out the root zone. However, it seems like you current issue is the lack of hardening-off the plants. They need to be gradually exposed to more sun over several days at least, but this can take a couple of weeks. This time of year, the sun is at its hottest and any interior light other than a full-blow HID setup is nowhere near the intensity of the sun. Start out by placing them in the shade, then partial shade, than full sun in the morning/evening only, all the way to full sun all day. See how they react; move them accordingly if they can't take it. Even fully hardened plants can look sad and wilted and require some shade in mid-day if the temperature is really up there.

Hi Guys, Sorry to intrude but I am the person who grew that Dorset Naga plant, and thought I would just add a few words. There is no secret to the growing; greenman28 is right, mostly it is the genetic ability of the variety Ã¯Â¿Â½" any Dorset Naga plant could do that. That particular plant was selected from the 1000 plants we had raised for selling. All we did was give it plenty of space, warmth, light, water and fertilizer so none of these things were limiting its growth. Having said that, the fertilizer regime was the same as we use for all our plants. By the way, this year we are running a competition to see who can get the most chillies off a Dorset Naga plant. Usually the magic number I use is 60 degrees for tomatoes and 65 for peppers. habjolokia: Maybe it was me you saw with the black plastic mulch. Here is what they looked like when I transplanted on April 25th (I planted about 2 weeks later than I wanted too) May 18th June 2nd They are blooming and setting on really nice now. Darylltx, If you have some time I found my bookmark (in my mess of saved bookmarks) this morning to an excellent write up titled Saga Jolokia by Harald Zoschke over at the Fiery Foods website. It's a bit dated but still a valid read IMHO. If you do get through it, for what it's worth, I'm not entirely sure I agree with the Frontal Agritech persons statement that "Naga jolokia, Nagahari, Bhut jolokia, Bih jolokia or Borbih jolokia are the same chilli but named differently at different places". For example I, and others, have observed at least one subtle but consistent difference between the Bhut and Bih Jolokia where the Bih tends to grow straighter. Another example is the Naga Moresh and Dorset Naga. Both are thought to be from the same Bangladeshi branch but there is a distinct difference between the two in that the Dorset puts out smaller pods. I agree with above. first, never use garden or top soil in a container. Second, with a product like Miracle gro, I am sure it already had a good dose of nutrients built into it and putting in more is not good. Third, and this is probably the biggest cause of your problems is moving them from a protected/filtered environment to the outdoors without "hardening" them off first. I would get them back in the green house and hope they rebound. Then, once they recover, slowly introduce them to the wind, unfiltered sun and all the other outside elements.

It is up to you, but you might want to re-transplant them into a mix designed for containers. Adding some Perlite or similar is a good idea with Peat based mixes as well.

Oh, and one other thing. That blue and white container in the photo looks a lot like RoundUp. If you get annnnyyyy of that on your peppers, it will wreck havoc. Just a slight bit of overspray or a drip here or there is going to be disasterous. Get that stuff away from all of your desired plants.

I just moved them over from where I had them originally. My greenhouse is too small to put them back in they were originally in solo cups. So do I put it back in a solo cup or repot it. I got Peat Moss today.

Ahhh, you might have to. I don't know where i would go here. i would hate to see you put them in a fresh 5 gallon bucket of mix and have them not make it. But putting them back in cups probably isn't ideal either. You would just have to replant them again soon. I guess it is up to you. Maybe try the cups for the bad looking ones and 5 gallon pails for the others. Then keep them in the shade for a few days until they look healthy and start putting them where they get more and more sun each day. Wind is also a factor.
