Naga Morich, Bhut jalokia, naga jolokia all the same pepper?

It seems pictures of the Bhut jalokia on google have a slender look and the Naga has a more blunt look. question: are all these peppers essentially the same pepper? The only one I ever grew seems to look like a naga morich. My plant is now 4 feet tall and with the recent week long rain in texas, it is starting to bloom again. But no blooms turn to peppers because of the over 90 temperature. I know one thing, the only one I grew I dried and today I ate one miniscule fleck (a pencil points worth) of skin with no seeds or flesh and my tongue, lips, and throat throbbed for 15 minutes. Wow... I thought my chile piquins were hot. Ill post a pic of when plant was small and see if pepper looks like a Naga Morich.

All the Naga / Jolokias originate from the Assam and Nagaland regions of India. There are a number of variations.

Sorry for a 2nd post, I forgot to add Manipur as the third region these peppers come from. As I said, there are a number of variations, probably from crossing with other varieties in the various areas.

The one thing consistent amongst all of them is that they are all crazy hot!

Before the 'Bhut Jolokia' won the Guinness record there was a rumor going around about a pepper called the Naga Jolokia (aka Tezpur, Assam, PC-1) being a C. Frutescens at 855,000 SHU. Seed companies started selling whatever they could sell with that name even though they didn't have a clue as to the proper variety. http://www.fiery-foods.com/dave/heatlevels2001.html Ecoseeds and Reimers as is evidenced in the above link both jumped on the bandwagon. In truth, the PC-1, Assam, Tezpur/Naga Jolokia they and whoever else were selling or trading WAS NEVER THE PEPPER cited in the SHU results from India. Many are selling or trading the PC-1 cayenne type pepper as a Naga/Bhut/Bih Jolokia million+ SHU pepper based on both bad information and fraud. Ebay is overrun with fraud seed claiming to be the million plus variety but is actually the cayenne-type variety. According to Frontal Agritech all the Naga/Bhuts are the same species just different names. http://www.frontalagritech.co.in/products.htm The real deal is a C. Chinense. However some people think there are differences. I have grown seed marked Bhut, Naga and Dorset and they all grew close enough so that if I didn't have labels on the pots I wouldn't have known the difference. I have not grown anything labeled Bih yet but based on what I have read and grown so far I wouldn't expect a difference. Ahh yes, the Naga / Jolokia naming game ;-) The Nagas / Jolokias go by MANY different names including Nagahari, Bhut Jolokia, Bih Jolokia, Borbih, Raja Mircha, Raja Chilli, Mirch, Mircha, Naga Moresh, Naga Morich, Tezpur, and Dorset Naga. It's easy to get confused as to what is what. Here's some info I saved from a pepper site a few years ago. Bhut Jolokia, Bih Jolokia, Naga Jolokia, Naga Morich, Raja Mirchi ... what's the deal with all those different names you can read in print and on the Internet these days for supposedly the very same chile variety? We asked someone who should know best: Leena Saikia of Frontal Agritech, a pepper grower and processing company in Assam that also grows and cultivates Bih Jolokia. Here's what Leena told me: All these chillies are from North East India. They belong to Capsicum chinense. In fact, Naga jolokia, Nagahari, Bhut jolokia, Bih jolokia or Borbih jolokia are the same chilli but named differently at different places. For example, the Assamese community call it as Bih jolokia (poison chilli -- jolokia means chilli in Assamese), Bhut jolokia (probably due to its ghostly bite or introduction by the Bhutias from Bhutan poison chilli) or Naga jolokia (due to extreme hotness representing the aggressive temperament of the warriors of neighbouring Naga community). In Nagaland and Manipur states, it is known as Raja Mircha or Raja chilli (King of Chillies). In major Indian languages, chilli is known as Mirch or mircha (Bengali and Hindi). Morich" may be a distorted version of 'mirch'. With respect to C. chinense Bih and Bhut difference, I recall reading that Bihs had some C.frutescens genes and Bhuts had some C.annuum genes. I think either name, Naga or Jolokia, works as long as you're describing a group of C. chinense pepper varieties from the Assam region of India. The different names come into play when you narrow them down to mutations that exhibit specific traits i.e. Naga Morich being plumper and shorter than longer Bhut Jolokias. Just my 2 cents.

Welcome, A 400W HID light should adequately cover a 4x4 foot area. I would look for a convertible ballast and start with a MH light and switch to HPS for flowering and pod production. If you haven't done so yet, you should check out the hydroponics forum here on GW as well. As for growing outside (I'm a couple of hundred K west of you in Ottawa), I started my Bhut seeds Jan. 5 and moved them up to 5 gallon pots under a 400W MH and moved them outside early June. They're doing well and I should have a decent harvest by end of our season. Best of luck, Bill

I unfortunately had a similar experience. I bought from an online seller advertising Naga Jolokia, when in fact, the pepper is a pc-1 (also known as Tezpur). I think that the problem is a linguistic one - there are more languages spoken in Assam than you might believe. Bhut Jolokia, Naga Jolokia etc. refer to the same pepper in different languages (Assamese, Hindi, Naga etc.). My best friend is Assamese but was unfortunately back home for the summer and couldn't warn me in time that I had the wrong thing. When he came back, however, what he told me was that the pepper I am growing (which looks a lot like Cayenne) is a more common ingredient in the kitchen. The bhut Jolokia's are also common in the kitchen, but are considered to be good for your stomach and are frequently eaten raw. His family typically eat the bhut after a meal. He mentioned that when used in cooking, it is added to a dish later (not in the oil at the beginning) and is often eaten with dried fish. At any rate, I don't have any inclination to go after the seller. He has since changed his description to pc-1, and for my part I will purchase most if not all of my pepper seeds from the pepper institute. Their prices are reasonable, and there is no doubt about what you are getting. So you know, the pc-1's are pretty damn hot - though I can see why they are not eaten raw; not much flesh and the heat tends to hit you in the gullet rather than the mouth. Oh well,... next year!

What you show us looks closest to the Bhut Jolokia that I've grown.
In my opinion, there can be no confusing the Bhut Jolokia and the Naga Morich -
they are two entirely distinct phenotypes. As far as "Naga Jolokia,"
I don't know because I've never grown it.

People throw names around, mislabel plants, and are sometimes misinformed as to the
type of plants they have.

Agreed. As per a previous discussion, some of us have experienced mixed seeds with Bhuts and Nagas mixed together from certain vendors. I'm sure that genetically, there are very minor differences, but they are still considered different strains.

If you have some time I found my bookmark (in my mess of saved bookmarks) this morning to an excellent write up titled Saga Jolokia by Harald Zoschke over at the Fiery Foods website.

It's a bit dated but still a valid read IMHO.

If you do get through it, for what it's worth, I'm not entirely sure I agree with the Frontal Agritech persons statement that "Naga jolokia, Nagahari, Bhut jolokia, Bih jolokia or Borbih jolokia are the same chilli but named differently at different places". For example I, and others, have observed at least one subtle but consistent difference between the Bhut and Bih Jolokia where the Bih tends to grow straighter. Another example is the Naga Moresh and Dorset Naga. Both are thought to be from the same Bangladeshi branch but there is a distinct difference between the two in that the Dorset puts out smaller pods. Just my subjective two cents ;-)

Yep, Bill is right about the differences betwixt the Bhut/Bih and the Dorset/Morich,
all four of which I grew from his seed (and noted the same distinctions).
