Thyme plant drying out and dying

Kara

Hello,
I bought a thyme plant at Ikea and I haven't had any luck keeping it alive. It was very bushy when I bought it, but a month later 80% of the plant has turned brown and dry. I have removed the dead leaves which flaked off easily. Now I'm left with a couple of pathetic stems that grow some puny leaves. :(
I had it on a window sill where it got lots of direct sunlight. The branches all lifted up and grew towards the window, but it still seemed to be withering away, without any healthy new growth. I have now moved it onto a hanging balcony pot where it gets indirect sunlight all day.
My rosemary plant that I also got from Ikea has done the same. It turned completely woody and all the leaves dried up and fell off. It is going in the garbage today. :(
Please help! I can't have this much of a black thumb, as other plants in my house are happy and have regular new growth... but ALL of my herbs die on me!
