Please tell me about Coupe D'Hebe

I'm confused about this rose. I noticed it on the on-line catalogue of a French nursery,Jardin de Talos,and was immediately attracted to the description of it as having very dark ("vert noiratre") foliage. This is listed as a Laffay Bourbon,1840. But Peter Beales' catalogue says "attractive light green foliage". So which is true? Also, how is it on re-bloom? Talos says it's only slightly,irregularly re-montant ; PB seems to consider it more reliably so; HMF says once-blooming . What is it's health like? Talos describes the foliage as decidedly healthy; HMF has one vote for it as "excellent" health. Are there more than one roses in commerce under this name, or what?

My Coupe d'Hebe in my PNW garden, grew upright and had medium green leaves. The flowers are very full so they flopped over in the rain.I would call the flowering as one large, main flush then the odd few. This is a rose that demands a rich diet. Towards the fall it did get BS a lot. The fragrance is very strong and the flowers hold their shape well. If you love old roses, then Coupe d' Hebe is a must have.

I'm right there with you on this one, Bart! Let's see what everyone says.. I have such limited space and would only give room for a once bloomer if it is really, REALLY special, and I'm biased to pink, cabbage blooms!!

Mine was a late season buy from an Agway that I think neglected it - on black pavement, no elevation for pot, near traffic, and it looked stressed. But the color is my daughter's favorite, she had just gotten engaged to a baseball fan, I figured it was supposed to come home. I planned to nurture it and give it to her when they bought a house. It died. But two years ago I was given an OSO Easy rose, Cherry Pie, with many of the same positive attributes. It is now in a giant pot on my deck, since it really isn't the right color for any of my rose gardens. If daughter doesn't want it, I'm keeping it as a deck plant, wintering it in a ditch under protection.

Hi Robin, Just saw your posting and responses and wanted to add some info. American Brass & Iorn as noted used recycled iron in their foundry for years. This iron included old auto engines, transmission and differential cases, etc. that of course previously had oil in them. Todays American foundry practices do not use those types of reclaimed metals to manufacture food processing materials such as cast iron cookware to my knowledge. This is a hot and sensitive issue and current question and concern about imported cast iron especially from China. If your pan were mine I would be cautious of its use until the material content could be confirmed. AB&I also used different logos on the bottom of their pans. Most if not all pans were marked with the American Cookware logo. I had a pan and have seen others with a covered wagon on the bottom, and have seen boats and ships, all depicting americana. Your pan is unusual because of its size, large pans are hard to find. I also agree and disagree with the link to Old Jack's seasoning recipe and cleaning technique. I deal in cast iron on ebay and clean 200 or so pieces a year using the electrolysis method, fast, easy, efficient, and no posinous chemicals used. For more info on cast iron and use and cleaning I recommend the Wagner and Griswold Society or the Griswold and Cast Iron Cookware Association websites. Nice, and really unique. You will just have to keep your eyes open for something that will work with that. Take the measurements down for what will work, you may get lucky and find something. The mirrors got separated on those vanities for hanging separately or just got broken. If you can find something maybe a simple round mirror with a black frame would work hanging on the wall above it. Before you try and strip and refinish check out re-amalgamation of varnish finishes. Google term or go to YouTube. Hint, if you can use this technique do it with a light hand if you want to retain patina. Also, don't remove patina from the drawer handles, just remove and give them a good scrub with soap and water. Here is one of many videos...I've used what is called mineral spirits, it's called whatever the guy uses in England, same stuff. Just check out YouTube videos. https://youtu.be/F9SsSF1Qv_Q Maybe not even use steel wool as this guy recommends. First try a gentle approach with a white cotton cloth dipped in mineral spirits. The process basically disolves the varnish, removes some, then the varnish re-hardens/drys. It happens rather quickly too. That is if it's natural varnish that was used, which is more likely than not. Doing a test spot will quickly tell you if it is varnish rather than polyurethane, basically nothing much will happen to finish if poly.

Any updates/comments on Coupe d'Hebe? In the catalogue of Francia Thauvin, they, too, describe it as having "feilliage vert clair",as opposed to "vert noiratre"! Also,Lynette/oldrosarian what exactly do you mean by a "rich diet"? What do you serve YOUR roses? How exactly do you provide a rich diet for a rose? I am very interested in knowing details, since I struggle so much with soil issues in my garden, and am trying to focus a lot on soil improvement.

Coupe d'hebe is still in my shopping cart.. I know I'll get it one day soon, but other roses have grabbed my attention first. Also, I'm waiting for more roses to get re-stocked with Heirloom because of their strange shipping policy now.. probbably will be my last order with them with all the changes that happened sadly

Hi Mary, I have a cope D'Hebe growing right now. It's a tiny little thing, but I'm treating her with kid gloves and lots of attention. She's doing great! Can't wait until she matures and I can brag on her!! 😊🌹
