Huge spider on my toilet paper roll

So this felt like something out of a movie but I go to the bathroom and reach to get a new roll and this monster spider was just hanging out on it. Does anyone have any clue what kind it is? I'm in Nothern California and have never seen one like this before...

We have them here in michigan and ive always known them as wolf spiders.

We just call them "brown house spiders". Their size they will scare the beejeezus out of you, however, they are usually docile unless cornered or accidently sat upon/mashed. Just be aware, like most spiders, they are venomous. Personally, I try not kill them, scooping them in a bag and releasing them outside, for they are great at controlling (eating) bugs - especially roaches. Their arachnid name is "Tigrosa annexa"

Toilet paper rolls or the rolls from paper towels also make great collars for seedlings. When I set out my broccoli, pepper and tomato seedlings, I cut toilet paper rolls into thirds, slit the ring and put around the seedling to protect from cutworms. A 2" high collar works best for me.

I have tried using them for root crops--with Nancy's shaping method, thanks!--but the seedlings languish. I think the cardboard must draw nitrogen from the soil, or that there is some growth retardant in the cardboard. It happened when I made cardboard dividers in a larger pot, too. In both cases, the cardboard was completely surrounded with moist soil, so I don't believe drying out wast he problem. Sweet peas, on the other hand wouldn't necessarily be bothered by the nitrogen problem. I don't know if they are N producers in the seedling stage, though.

There's an explaination on another thread you might want to check out. I would not put more than 2 or 3 seeds in each, and then just plant the whole thing in the ground. It does keep them separate. Here is a link that might be useful: Toilet paper rolls

Around here, 4# bags of sugar are common. I noticed the peanut butter jars that used to bulge outward now have an hourglass look and bulge inward! Haven't checked to see how many ounces they cut. Years ago I started buying Scott paper products. Excellent value. I'm amazed they don't sell better. Considering one roll of Scott equals about 5 rolls of the others, do the math on the fraction of the cost. Although I have to say, being a little narrower, if it is, doesn't bother me. The width doesn't affect the use here. I did notice some of the paper towels being narrower though and that affects how it's held on the paper towel holder. I understand the cutting sizes, but what annoys me is the other things like adding water to meats. That annoys me.

I see them in PA, and one shows up in the house every year. Mostly I see them outside, where I hope you'll put that one. Sicco's right--they are useful (as well as interesting)!

1. Wolf spiders carry their babies on their backs. Hit one with babies is like unleashing a spider bomb. If you want a spider nightmare check out the video link below. I could not sleep knowing one was in the house.

Beautiful!!! I always have a few in my home every year, harmless to me, and I can't remember their name but I always adapt a "catch and release" and I hope you do the same!

Definitely wolf spider, may be Schizocosa mccooki or S. avida, based on the markings.
