How much do you tip your hairdresser?
Comments (38)Tracey! LOL! You would have had to see what it looked like before to really appreciate what is changed. The red had faded to an ugly rusty looking mix of strawberry blonde and yucky roots and I had come to the conclusion that is was cheaper to have the hair returned to some normal shade of blonde than it was to replace about 40% of my entire wardrobe that was various shades of pink, red and purple that I could no longer wear with the red hair. The operator did 3 sets of whole head foils, putting in low lights, base color and blonder highlights, then he cut it in a more managable style (lower maintenance, I no longer have to spend 40 min styling it before i can go to the bus stop) and I was pampered with latte, biscotti and great conversation during the entire 3 hour process. I'm not sure it "looks" like a $300 "do" but it looks MILES better than it did when I went in and I can now wear everything in my closet again! I have worn pink or red EVERY single day since Sat! Comments (8)I absolutely love my weathered or leathered black pearl granite countertops. (One shop called them weathered, the other leathered.) They NEVER show stains--but they are black, after all. They are easy-peasy to clean--just a quick wipe. What look like pits in the photo below, taken under angled light, are only slight indentations. Nothing sticks in them. I can roll out pie dough and wipe off the countertop with a soapy cloth. It was sealed when installed, I guess. I have done nothing else to it in three years except treasure it and wash it with soapy water when grease splatters on it from the stove. The granite is a tactile delight. Several friends stand and pet it idly, the way one does a friendly dog. No one ever pets my island, which is a different granite in a traditional finish. Yours will be gorgeous. May I stop by and pet it?...See MoreDo you tip your contractor?
Comments (15)Cash, like water, is hard to hold onto. People appreciate it most when they need it; otherwise it's symbolic. Tips in cash are nice. Like a smile. : - ) Sure, we can spend more when we have it to spend. Few people save it for their old age. Sending a contractor to another buyer with whom they get along well : this is worth more than gold. Tagging someone with a note that allows "good" buyers to find them would be Also One More Good Thing too. I dream of a future where we can transfer a cumulative "worth note" to someone so that our faith in their abilities comes across to prospects in the surrounding area (space and time). A credibility rating, it shows through to those who seek by similar criteria as ours allowing us to see the best of their strong suits and evaluate fairly where they are less well endowed. This will be one way that the internet will have achieved its potential: a little sharing goes a long way. But only if it's structured sharing. I agree with marcolo's assessment about some contractors who need lessons that are best learnt before the age of 7. I've come across people who couldn't adapt well to any field of productive endeavor end up becoming generalist contractors. (We cannot all be above average (!) and this means there has to be a place for those who are visibly below average. Keeping them in line has always been a challenge. A credibility rating note can be one more factor helping to keep people in line. hth...See Morewhat do you tip your mailman at Christmas?
Comments (49)This is a very old thread and the beginning of summer but will be Christmas sooner then we think. I do tip my mail carrier as well as my refuse service. Sure my mail carrier makes good money and the refuse service charges a fortune. However, they both provide a service. We have a regular mail carrier and what I did last year was buy gourmet chocolates (Toberlone, Godiva, Ghirradelli) and a card with a note of thanks for her going out of her way. She could just leave packages out at the box but she brings them to the door and actually waits for us to answer unlike the Fed Ex guy who knocks and runs, if he even bothers to get out of the truck. As a side note, on Christmas Eve last year a substitute carrier had a package so he came to the door with it and our mail. DH said there is a gift in the mailbox, thinking we'd give that to him and replace for the regular carrier. The substitute didn't take it. I thought that was really nice that he figured he only delivered once and wouldn't take away from regular carrier....See Morejellytoast
