What the heck? Udisk??

Last year I ordered a 128 GB flashdrive from somewhere, don't remember exactly. I wanted to be able to save a majority of my photos on one flashdrive instead of many drives. I have just discovered that a ton of the photos I thought were on it are not. The file and it's name is shown listed but when you click on the file it is empty. So, I thought I must have just gotten in a hurry so I have spent a few hours trying to "fix" it. I add them to the flash drive and it looks like they are there. I work a little bit more and then when I go back they are gone again. It shows as Udisk when I put it in the PC, so I guess that is the brand? Did I just get a bad one or what? I am going to research more and try to find from where I ordered it. It was very inexpensive and it took a while to get it so I am sure it came from China or somewhere!

I just found the information on what I bought. It is supposed to be a 128 GB USB 2.0 Flash Mini Thumb drive. When click on Properties, it says that it has 108 GB free.

Udisk drives are usually used for an Ipad or IPhone, does yours have a usb on each end one being smaller?

I don't think I've ever seen an old attic which didn't have flooring--I'd bet that practice started after the war when so many houses needed to be built for returning vets, since most of those didn't have full-height attics. :) I find the beaverboard interesting, and I think that is what I removed from my basement ceiling--it only covered the part under the living room for some reason--maybe to keep stuff from the old coal furnace getting into the upstairs? My house was built in 1908, and yet, my attic has the original finish--lath and plaster! It was even papered, but I don't know the pattern since every scrap of wallpaper in the house was painted over at least once--the downstairs hall had at least three coats of paint and about 1/16" of paper!

bean, Bur oaks from more southern/western portions of its native range - which extends from northern Mexico to southern Canada - tend to produce acorns that can be quite large. I have one selection from those Auburn University trees that Jeff mentioned that produces acorns that sometimes run in the neighborhood of 6-8/lb - with caps removed. But I also have seedlings of bur oak from Manitoba whose acorns run more in the vicinity of 100/lb. Quite a range in acorn size... but the trees are unmistakably the same species. Large acorns produce vigorous seedlings - there's a lot of stored carbohydrate for them to draw upon in their seedling year, but large acorn size does not necessarily translate into larger mature tree size.

I've got a lot of NuTone stuff in my house from that era. It is mostly bathroom exhaust fans and heater/exhaust fan/lights. One of them is a curious contraption that looked to me, earlier, to have a way to make it into an HVAC supply, possibly in a controlled manner . Now, I have some more info. Please forgive a little hijacking the thread Thanks for posting that link to the catalog, North Texan. I love that 50s ad stuff. I've got between 3 and 5 things out of that catalog in my house. First, some residual, nonworking intercom equipment. It looks like I have a 5000 series Hood-Fan in my kitchen with its dual squirrel cage blowers. Now that I know what the original lights looked like, I can take a close look at what the electrician/owner did when he hacked a 3' T12 luminaire in there. I've also got a "Fold-away" listed right under the 5000 series. The high wall mounted fan is probably a NuTone. I'll have to take a close look. The outside hood says NuTone and I feel it in my heart that it has a "patented no flutter shutter". I have, however, only a simple snap action switch ganged with a light switch in the same box. AMS, you want to sell your switch? I might be able to use it though I might need to pull some cable. Now, the bathroom heater-fan might be a close miss. My dampered outlet is definitely at the top rather than the side. Mine also appears to do more than this and the model number is different, longer. Maybe the longer number is an indication of added functionality. On the other hand, perhaps my was modified by the owner for top outlet. The bimetal spring might be what closes the (original) louvre. I really need to buy a full living room set and help with where to place everything so it is not crowded, I would need a area rug , What type of sofa , And placement , What size tv and what do out it on and placement , Wall colors and which wall what color ? Ideas for the Florida room windows? I love grays and I want to find the additional colors to add with them for the furnishings, I need clean looking organized, Simple , Modern and contemporary, Affordable ! It has a USB on one end, just like my other flashdrives. I only use that term Udisk because that is what it calls itself .....that is what it says is (E:) I don't think that is what it really is. While I was checking it's properties I clicked on "tools" and there was a tab for error-checking, so I did that. It scanned and said that there were some issues but it fixed it. Now it is worse! It shows some files that look like empty tiles and when you click on them it says "Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because Photo viewer doesn't support this file format, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Viewer" which is ridiculous as the rest of the picture files can be opened up!

I'm not saying it is, but the possibility came to mind when you said "very inexpensive".

Probably what I would do if I had one I suspected might be fake
would be to format it, copy about 128GB of files onto it and then
try to copy them back to my PC.

I believe a 128 GB (gigabyte) drive should hold around 119 GiB (gibibyte) of data.

I think that may be the issue. I don't think I can get 128GB of data on it! As I said, I've been loading photos on there and I thought that they were there but when you go to open them, they aren't! Yes, inexpensive...like $7. I am just glad that I didn't delete the photos from my other flash drives in my effort to consolidate!

$7 does sound too cheap to me, especially a year ago. Reading the eBay article linked to above, they mention a German tool that supposedly exposes fakes. I haven't used it but if I were in your shoes, I'd probably be curious enough to try it.

I heard back from the Chinese person that sold me this flashdrive when I told him it was a fake:

He's telling you to move on. I would advise you to NOT reformat the drive, there's too much risk to you of doing permanent damage to your PC if you do it in slightly the wrong way. It would seem to be a substandard product, I'd toss it in the trash and forget about it.

Last year, a normal price for a real thumb drive of market quality in this size might have been $50-$75. The price you paid should have been enough of a red flag that what you bought was a fringe product, at best. Thankfully you have other copies of these files.

Buy a name brand thumb drive to replace it and expect to pay something in the $30-$50 range.

What the heck? Udisk??
