Drawer pull sizing help

We decided on all Amerock Westerly pulls for our kitchen, no knobs. The pull size we sampled and liked was 128mm (5") on center -- from end to end is about 6.3" I think.

It seemed to look good on all of the doors and drawers (even the tiny drawers), but we have one large drawer below the microwave area that is 36" and are worried the same single pull will either look too small or that two pulls will damage the drawer over time because no one will open the drawer with both pulls (myself included).

The pull size choices are: 5" OC, 6" OC, 12" OC Appliance Pull, or 18" OC Appliance Pull...the appliance pulls have a 50mm projection while the regular pulls have a 34mm projection so an appliance pull would stick out more. Is it better to use an appliance pull on the large drawer or just go with a single 5" or 6" OC pull? Or do I use the 5" OC pulls on doors & tiny drawers and do 6" OC on the larger drawers? The drawer in question is below the microwave cabinet and I threw in the other side of the kitchen for good measure. :)

I just put the same size pulls on all our drawers and cabinets and imo they look fine on our large drawers. We did one on everything

The Amerock Westerly also comes in a 160mm pull. I would (and did) use it for the 36" drawer. I bought mine from Lee Valley. I would not use the appliance pull for your 36" drawer.

We have 2 pulls on the cabs that are 30 or wider and 1 pull on everything else. I find that with the smooth operation of our cabs that having 2 pulls is nice. I can reach a pull from either side of the drawer and never use 2 pulls at the same time. It helps if you have a few people in the kitchen at the same time, esp for the 36" wide drawers. I also like the double pull look better on the wide and deep drawers. Most don't do a 4 stack of drawers that wide, so I am not sure how a single pull would work in that instance. These are 30" wide drawers with 2 pulls. I can't picture them with only 1. Notice that neither pull is very far from the center:

Sorry, I do not agree with The Cook’s Kitchen. The rule of thumb is that the pull should be roughly 1/3 the size of the drawer. Your 160mm (6”) will not be big enough for your 30” drawers. I do not agree that all pulls should be the same size. They make different sized pulls for a reason - so that they’re in proportion to the varying size drawer widths. Most everyone with base cabinet drawers has different widths of drawers next to each other. The 96mm that The Cooks Kitchen recommended is 3” and will look puny on your 21” and 24” drawers. You need 7” (178mm) and 8” (203mm) pulls respectively, or, if you want them the same width, pick either 7” or 8” for both size drawers - whatever is the closest equivalent in mm. Try making aluminum foil templates of the pulls in the sizes you are interested in. Hold them up to the drawers. The visual will enable you to decide between sizes.

I have to disagree w/you naysayers. It's quite functional, thank you. it doesn't pull the drawer wonky and works just fine, nice and smooth. Nothing is pulled out of alignment, even if I do use one hand. And yes, my heavy pots are in there. Perhaps your cabinet maker isn't using sturdy drawer glides. good lord. Not all pulls come in 12" and larger. I happen to think the pulls in the other pic posted looks very modern and I didn't want the look of appliances sized pulls on my drawers, in spite of what you think is correct. I think the 3 of you are being a little dramatic. I see double pulls all the time.

I agree with it being a matter of personal taste. I have heard, however, that as a general rule (if using a single pull) the pull should be 1/3 the width of the drawer. I generally followed that in my kitchen and it does seem to work well. I am not a pro, though, so hopefully one of them will chime in!

sherri, yes, the 160mm pull is the 6" OC which I thought about doing for just that one, or maybe for all of the larger drawers and do the tiny drawers with the 128mm (5" OC).

I did the 160mm size for the drawers which were over 30" and the 128mm size for everything else except for my narrow pullouts. I used the 3" pulls for those. I liked the 96mm on my narrow drawers (15"), but DH preferred the 128, so that's what I did. I think if you stick with the 128 everywhere except for the one big drawer you won't even notice that it is a different size pull.
