fertilizing indoor vs outdoor plants
Comments (3)I use mainly slow release fertilizer rated for 5-6 months. I add it once early in the season, usually around April. By the time October rolls around, most of the fertilizer should be gone. During the indoor retreat, I feed my Palms occasionally with a diluted liquid fertilizer with micronutrients. The purpose is not growth. I give this to prevent any potential deficiencies. The winter goal is to maintain the plant in a state of suspended health, but inevitably some growth still occurs albeit slow. More important for healthy containerized Palms is to make sure that each time you water, you do it thoroughly to leach out toxic salts. Outdoors, there is rain and the ever-present hose to take care of it. But indoors, watering frequency should be reduced so salts build up MUCH more quickly. Many species are quite sensitive to this, and it will manifest itself as browning of the leaf tips. Most folks attribute this to lack of humidity, cold temps or some other cause but the ailment is simply inadequate leaching. And NEVER, EVER let your Palm sit in a saucer filled with drained water (unless you have aquatic or marginal plants). This water is poison. x...See MoreLeasing plants/indoor plant care?
Comments (13)heptacodium has a point. There are clients who just want cheap, and they get what they pay for. The really nice looking plants are serviced by companies who charge more and deliver more. It's kind of like a McDonald's meal vs. a fancy steak house. You pays your money and you takes your choice. Right now, with the recession looming, people are getting very price conscious, and hiring the lowballers or cancelling the plant service altogether. It's a tough time to be getting into the industry, or trying to stay alive in it. There is also a real swing away from the "fern bar" look of the 70's and 80's to a stark minimalist look. Just one or a few big striking plants in a fancy, artistic container. Lots less maintenance income to be had on that....See MoreComparison of Indoor vs Outdoor growing
Comments (11)After reading this, I went out to my little hobby greenhouse to check out the jalapenos in protection from the wind and uv rays. Well they just tower over the ones that are outside. They flowered about 10 days later than the outdoor ones and yes, I agree, the production just doesn't seem to measure up. Hmm, probably too late, but I think I'll move them outside. I can't compare any other varieties because I have limited space inside. The super hots that I am growing for the first time scored most of the indoor real estate. Of course I also did not expect any of the indoor plants to take up so much room when mature- stupid me thought they would only be a couple of feet tall with limited girth when mature, not the 4-6' they shot up. It's too late for this year, but I am thinking of doing a little comparison experiment using hydroponics. I've been studying everything I can get my hands on about the subject to see if I have the patience to go this route. I'm thinking of something that I can easily move around or segment to set up in two areas-indoors and out maybe?...See MoreCan this plant be used indoors + outdoors?
Comments (6)where in CA zone 10 .... they can only take so much cold ... so we have to define the odds of how cold .. if that question is answered ... then there is no reason they cant go outside ... but after 5 years inside ... they can ONLY go outside in full shade ... they would need to be hardened off to real sun ... and little pots with huge plants ... are also problematic.. in that the pot itself can dry out too fast in sunshine.. so to be on the safe side.. lets just call it full shade... which itself.. is usually many times brighter than indoors ... plus.. dont forget.. how you watered.. indoors... is irellevant.. to how it will need to be watered.. outdoors... you will have to redefine your protocol ... and it might be best .. if you figure that out.. before you hire someone who might not know ... there is a houseplant forum as well as a container garden forum ... and you never know.. where you will find the peep with the most spot on info .. i am not up on the names.. but i would call one or both.. a corn plant .. compare at link ... though i am sure.. the wizards will firm that up for you ... ken BTW: your other problem outdoors.. will be how to make sure.. that every little breeze.. doesnt knock it over .... since they are both.. sail boat sails in small pots that dont weigh much ... ps: the tall one.. can probably be hacked off.. like the smaller.. should you wish to reign in its height.. someday down the line ... [rain.. rein.. reign .... whatever.. lol .. probably rein in .. like a horse.. eh] Here is a link that might be useful: link...See MoreJenn TheCaLLisComingFromInsideTheHouse
