Trimming dying leaves/stems or leave alone?

What do you do? I hate cutting off a huge squash leaf that is dying. Big gaping hole - but leaving dead leaves contributes to getting spotty mildew and other things because they clog, hold moisture and stop air circulation.

So is it better to let them die/rot on their own or cut off when they are clearly not going to make it? Sooner also means plant can focus on new growth vs. old that is not going to make it anyway.
