Raised bed versus container gardening
Comments (2)Raised beds have the advantage of being in/on the ground, providing better drainage with no perched water. They also provide more space, more moisture retention, and take up WAY less space in ragards to how much you can plant per square foot. The advantages with growing in containers are that you can move them as needed, for storms, frost etc. Also, you can apply your fertilizer specifically as needed for each plant. Not to mention you can grow veggies in places where you cannot make a raised bed, like apartment patios and balconies. If I had to choose though, I'd definately go for the raised bed if I had the ability to do so. Joe...See Moreoverwintering a container fig
Comments (1)Spring would be best to plant in ground before new growth starts. If you do not have an unheated space, then you will have to wrap the tree and container and overwinter outside....See MoreSpacing of fig trees in ground
Comments (17)When I first began to collect figs a few years ago, I originally planted my figs about 25 ft. apart. I chose that spacing based on some of the recommendations in the literature as well as the size of the one fairly mature fig tree I had at the time. After my fig collection began growing like kudzu(!), I decided that I really didn't want to take up an acre or two of space with the collection, so I began planting fig varieties at the smallest spacing that I thought might allow me to evaluate the fig varieties and enjoy them for a reasonable number of years with moderate but not draconian pruning. I have planted about 50 varieties on approximately a 12-13 ft. spacing. Time will tell whether or not I have chosen wisely. If I was planting for the long haul and space was not an issue, I think that 20-25 ft. is about right. If the goal is for each tree to be as vigorous as possible, then the wide area over which fig roots spread probably make 12 or 13 ft. spacing too close in the long run. The key to making closely spaced fig plantings work is pruning, I think. All but the most rampantly growing varieties can probably be kept to a reasonable size for decades. Pruning so many fig trees every year is going to be quite a chore, though!...See MoreShould I fertilize my figs in containers?
Comments (11)D, thank you for thinking about me.:) But no, I was not traveling but having a lot of family visitors at one time of another, a lot of shopping and cooking for all.. It is fine because I have to be at the house anyway taken care of my older dogs and now I am preparing for another round of visitors soon. Gives me enough time to plant the garden for fall, All the visitors enjoyed the garden and what produces, this time I hope to have the tomatoes ready and some other things. About the figs, they produce so much better when planted on the ground with a lot of organic material. In the pots the production is limited, that is the reason that I put 2 guavas in a pot, I just get enough fruit for me....See More- 7 years ago
