Worst cold ever

I'm headed into week two of probably the worst cold in my life. Just spent yet another sleepless night coughing/choking. It began with a two day raging sore throat and body aches/chills then progressed to completely blocked nasal passages and deep "productive" bronchial-type cough. I have a near constant headache from coughing and wheezing. All my senses are screwed up--eyes runny, no sense of smell or taste. My chest hurts from coughing. Not much let up after a week except that sometimes the cough isn't so productive--but it hurts more because it is "dry."

I've tried all sorts of things with little result. I'm using the neti pot/saline solution a lot. Hot steamy showers. Too much Afrin unfortunately but I am so blocked up it almost scares me at times--I can't breathe!. Things like Nyquil don't do a thing. Lots of water but even that hurts because I often feel sick to my stomach as well.

Looks like I'll be taking two weeks off work just for a cold. Gosh, I feel just miserable! I can't imagine going to the doctor would do anything at all.I also have NO idea where I picked up such a virulent summer cold. I rarely gets colds at all.

Sympathy? Advice?

I'm so sorry you are ill, and that it has lasted so long.

If you are actually having breathing problems at times, I suggest going to a doctor ASAP. These symptoms may be something more than an ordinary cold.

You need to see a doctor if for no other reason than to get some meds that will give you some relief. Two weeks is a long time for the symptoms to continue to be so severe. Sure hope you feel some relief soon.

I can't complain about the weather as it's been pretty good for me. Most people in Michigan have been getting steady rain this summer but somehow it's been missing me for the most part. It would be pouring down rain less than a quarter mile from my house and yet I'd barely even get a sprinkle. That is until the last few weeks and I'm thankful for these recent rains. Tomatoes and zucchini were coming in nicely. The tomatoes were mostly early determinates so they are pretty much done producing and would have done better if I could keep them fertilized properly. I planted them all in new garden beds that I made this year and I should have known better than to do that. Zucchini has powdery mildew and I'm ripping them out today. Green bush beans (Jade) didn't peform as expected but the wax beans (Pencil Pod) did well. Beets did well, peppers are producing, cabbage is heading up, lettuce was great earlier this year, shallots were okay, and garlic was hit or miss. Definitely the year of the wasp. Found two large nests recently. They've taken up residency in the mole tunnels (I've got moles, mice, and shrews but no voles that I'm aware of). I was stung a week and a half ago for the first time in around 17 or 18 years. It got me on the pinky finger and both my finger and a small part of my hand swelled up for three days. That was bothersome. Slugs are an issue in the garden I started this year at my grandma's. Never had a problem with them in my home gardens before so I was completely unprepared for them over there. I only get over there about once a week and it seems like whenever I do, it is forecast to rain so I'm hesitant to put slug bait out if it's just going to get washed away. I dehydrate excess sweet peppers and grind them into a powder. They are too sweet on their own but if you mix them with hot peppers you get a nice sweet and spicy powder that goes good on meat (especially pork), in beans, and in chili. bboy - just wanted to thank you for the good advice - I did take the pics and fruit & leaves to my local nursery - there was a man there who was able to identify it in 2 minutes - it is "syzygium australe" or Australian bush cherry. It is native to Australia, and can attain 90 feet in the wild in temperate rain forests there! Evidently it was sold in this area for decades as a shrub/hedge/topiary plant, which would explain why I have seen so many huge mature old trees of it around my old neighborhood. Wonderful thread, Bobby... see what your Banana Bread experience has spawned. Glad to know I'm not alone. My brothers, I'm sure, would have several "bizzo meals" to mention, as I like ingredients more exotic for their tastes (like mushrooms in my spaghetti sauce) but I think my worst was the first I served my now DH... One of my brother's had given me a variety of flavored vinegars asa Christmas present... one a "Salsa Vinegar" that I'd never tried before. I made a vinaigrette dressing, and the new BF (now DH) had forced down several bites of his salad (good boy, taught to clean his plate) before I got to my first one. One bite and I immediately removed the salad bowls from the table with "you do not have the eat this!!" It was HOT, and awful... DH says it took several more meals before he trusted that I really can cook!! LOL

I'm having the best time reading your memories. @Kippy. ROFL boiled lawn. I read it to my husband and he said, "that's just like your pennywort drink but worse". At least my drink has sugar in it to offset the taste. @jillius Durian smells really bad raw. Did the candy smell too? @mushcreek. I had to look up chitlins. OMG hog's intestines and guts. And it's served with my favorite foods, collard greens and fried chicken? Say what!! The name sounds like little critters running around, especially chitterlings. @mgmum Yes..... that's what I have nightmares and wrote about. Uni = RAW sea urchin. It looks like slimy, congealed barf. @flamingfish I used to feel the same way as you about oysters until someone introduced me to the right kinds of oysters. The oysters that I've learned to love are small and sweet. They're slightly chewy like clams and are delicious with lemon and a dash of spicy red sauce. Even my husband likes them and he is afraid of any food that isn't processed or packaged in a box or plastic. Those kinds of oyster are pretty expensive though so we only eat them when in San Francisco at a specific oyster bar during their happy hour. The oysters are $1/each then. @ Bob. if it's really "Cow fetus in placenta sauce" , you definitely beat the goat's eyes. @mrspete. Oooooh a Scots for hubby. I adore Scots and their accent. I will take your advice and NEVER try haggis. I don't need another memory scar. By the way, have you seen Outlander? @artemis "one could not remotely begin to guess which nodules were peppercorns or bits of lead shot!" - Too funny. @blubird. Yuck and just curious. Why are the ingredients no longer allowed to be sold?

Sounds like it's not cold. Afrin should be used no more than five days, so what will you do now that it's so many days? Ugh! I can hear from where you're coming. I had a sinus infection from June of 2015-February 2016. In the last months, I had no sense of smell or taste. In January, that's when I had enough. It was coming of my eyes (you too?), and then they scheduled sinus surgery for me. I'm not saying you have sinus stuff, but I do know the depths of the agony and I do know what doctors can do to alleviate the pain. I hope you get rid of this thing NOW. waving my magic wand

I just went through this. I thought it was a bad cold too and on the 4th day woke up with a sore throat and ears. Went to urgent care....we were traveling.....and it was a sinus infection. Unfortunately, the antibiotics only did so much so I went to my dr when we got home and got a stronger antibiotic. I think it's finally knocking it out of my system but still don't feel 100% 2 1/2 weeks later.

About ten years ago I thought " it's just a cold" and didn't go to the dr until a week in. By then I had bronchitis and then it turned into pneumonia. Do go to the dr or urgent care ASAP.....you probably need antibiotics since your symptoms aren' t getting better or lessening with time.

I can sympathize! I've had the exact same thing for the last week. Started with a very painful sore throat, then stuffed nose and then that horrible, painful deep cough. It's been a week and I'm just starting to feel better.

2 weeks is a long time though. Mine only lasted a week, with some residual but much less severe symptoms still lingering. I suggest a doctor to make sure it isn't bacterial.

Go to the doctor...NOW. You should have been improving by now, and you are not.

My last sinus 'episode' required seeing an ENT, then three rounds of antibiotics, plus a week of Prednisone in the middle. I am still getting gunk out of my head, but I avoided pneumonia!

I agree; get thee to the doctor straight-away! Sometimes you feel too lousy to see the signs of something more. You could certainly have bronchitis or pneumonia.

I'm agreeing with the others, week two and losing sleep with that kind of cough and you should probably at least get something from the doctor for that. You could have a secondary bacterial infection (bronchitis, sinus) by now if this began as a cold virus. Something similar happened to my brother last month, he took a long weekend with his wife in San Francisco, a healthy not yet 60 yr old, flew back on Monday with head cold that turned into a sinus infection and kept him home from his office - really rare for him. Dr, and antibiotics needed. In summer, go figure.
