Why no Bloom Booster before bloom?
Comments (8)Hi MH I don't know quite what you bloom booster are, but many experts recommend a fertilizer when the roses are in bloom. Then the plants are looking for more nutrient to grow and set new flowers. For some varieties this is more true than others though. When my roses have bloomed for a bit I use a liquid organic fertilizer on the roses that I give extra care and that I know benefit from it. I choose something with lots of kalium not the ones that are mostly nitrogen. But any fertilizer with about the same content of K and N will benefit the roses. Some have a strong belief that lots of phosphorous promotes root growth and buds but I do not see the big difference here....See MoreTime for some blooms...well, almost for some!
Comments (19)I hate to hear you're not getting around well today Jodi, but hope the photos distract you a little from any pain. Thank you also, Jan. My indoor photos can't hold a candle to your outdoor ones!!! Gosh, I'm a dork...I should have labeled the group photo! Jodi, that is indeed Sweet Lilian on her third scape. It thought she was done after 2, and pulled her out of her pot to investigate and there was another bud coming. She has been in bloom and teasing bloom almost the entire time I've had her! I remembered seeing someone's photos with 4 scapes and knew I had to have one of those! Hopefully a fourth may emerge? I can dream, right? Ok, here is another group photo and I wish I could say this was even half of my children: From Misc Pictured from the top on the ledge left to right: 'Red Lion' and Red with white stripes NOID in a planter, 'Sweet Lilian', 'Red Lion', 'Gilmar' and 4 other 'Red Lions' in silver bowl, 'Red (or Double) Dragon', and 'Picotee'. On the filing cabinet are back to front: some kind of palm plant that is not very happy right now, my not Minvera in the back with HUGE leaves, another 'Red Lion' just in leaves, and an 'Apple Blossom' replacement from the one that didn't bloom in bud. Below them on the floor are a big Pothos (in a big tacky pot, but someone gave it to me and I don't know what to do with it) and some kind of Dracena that doesn't really like me. All the leaves fell off, but when I stopped watering it, it grew from the top...so odd! On the wood bench/storage thingy left to right: A gardenia in bud from Vday, a Norfolk Island Pine from last year, 'Flamingo Star' in front, my money tree or Pachira, a random Christmas Cactus, beside and behind are 2 kinds of arrow plant, and then on the floor is a big pot with 7 clearance bulbs of the varitey 'Red Lion'...geez! I have a ton of red lions! I've hit too many clearance sales it seems!!! Hope you don't get exhausted reading all of this...if so, just skip it and look at the photo! HAHA! -Frank...See MoreSome blooms before the 'storm'
Comments (13)Thanks Jean. Too bad your BETTY BOOP didn't make it. The deer never seem to go after mine. Maybe it's where it's located. Bgrose, thankfully we never did get a storm.... yet! It got really cold tho all day. There were some dark clouds north of us. Hopefully they'll just pass on by. Wow Kate! 29°?? Yikes! We did get down to about 35 I think this morning. I had to wear two shirts outside to work out there. Bone-chilling cold. Carla, the irises thankfully seemed to get thru the cold and wind last night. But everything is just sorta at a standstill. Nothing new opened up yet. I hate this! Wow Aprille, too bad about the neighbors' jasmine. The way our winds were blowing last night I expected all sorts of damage out there today. But the only thing that happened was, a small potted succulent fell off the porch railing. Maryl, I'm really sick of this winter weather. I want warm beautiful sunny weather!! I really hate the winds. Hopefully by tomorrow it will warm up and be "normal." Oh, that new rose TRUMP CARD is a sport of ROSIE O'DONNELL. Cliff Orent discovered and named it, and is selling it thru his new nursery in Southern CA. I'm not sure when he'll be officially announcing that the nursery is open for sales, but it should be soon. Keep an eye out!! (actually, if you search the rose on HMF, you'll find his nursery listing) Hey Leslie! It's kinda neat hearing the windchimes going in the high winds isn't it? Except when they're slamming against the house! Yes, BETTY BOOP is usually more pink and white, but when she first opens she can be a real deep red and yellow. Thanks Judy. Hopefully the "storm" will just pass us by. I did hear it could still come tonight. We'll see....See MoreSaving blooms before the heatwave
Comments (13)Hi Helen I keep about 35 bushes for cutting, the others like Ebb Tide or Felicia or Marie Pavie etc are not suitable for cutting. I only cut the good blooms though. The ones on short stems or too open already are left in the garden for display but they'll fry in the heat. Judy yes we do get the occasional freezing temps in winter but not very often. We have about 300 hours of chilling hours in winter. Just enough for my low chill stone fruits to break dormancy....See More- 7 years ago
