Maple Tree Disease (zone 10)

I live in Southwest Florida, zone 10. Its been hot, humid and rainy. Nearly all the new leaves on my red maple tree are shriveling up and turning brown. I'm hoping someone can help me identify the problem so I can treat it.

I don't see any signs of a disease and your tree actually looks to be in pretty good shape!! Or at least the photos you have provided seem to support that contention :-) I see signs of healthy new growth.

Red maples are extremely tolerant of a very wide range of growing conditions and climates and are pretty tough customers. I'd just continue to monitor it. When was the tree planted?

You might want to try a crape myrtle. Here in Sarasota they grow real well and bloom on and off from May to October. Also, I was just down in Fort Lauderdale for several days and they are common there also which is a little more tropical than here. We are in zone 9b/10a, where Fort Lauderdale/Miami would be in zone 10b. They have beautiful blooms which resemble lilacs without a fragrance and have many varieties probably some that are dwarf varieties that would be suitable for a container. They usually lose their leaves for a few months then in April the new leaves come out. I'm also from near Chicago and have found that only a few plants from there will work here although Chicago didn't have Crape Myrtles.

They grow just fine here is San Diego,right on the coast burning in not a problem if well located, inland they will burn if not protected from heat & hot dry winds. Type of tree is also important the laceleafs cannot handle midday full sun and inland will fry if exposed, laceleafs should be in pots so they can be moved or located so they are in mostly shade from midday on.One of the biggest factors to them burning for us though is the amount of salts in the water , up in the L.A. area the water comes mostly from the Sierras and is low salt, in S.D. our water is from the Colorado river and much saltier so for the same amount of heat you will most likely get more burn in S.D. than L.A. I have seen some 50 year old plus examples in so. Ca. that are growing in the ground and are quite a bit taller than the houses they were planted next to.That being said if you grow them down here and are not right on the coast or the tree is not protected from Santa Ana winds and midday sun expect some burn.And inland never put a pencil thin one gallon tree exposed to midday sun out on its own it will burn to death. get it up to decent size in a pot for several years before planting in an exposed location.

Any maple cultivar that could thrive in zone 10? I need guidance.

Japanese maples can be grown in zone 10 coastal southern California but that area lacks the humidity that Florida typically produces. With only the rare exception, JM's produce the smallest types of maples or those most likely to be suited for a patio container. It really doesn't matter which cultivar you pick - none will be more tolerant of high summer/fall humidity than another and the light conditions would seem to be appropriate for any as well. FWIW, higher humdity levels would be likely to produce a lot of foliar fungal problems I'd be skeptical about expecting much in the way of fall color.....much of that has to do with cold temps concentrating sugars and pigments and that is unlikely to happen for you. Doesn't much in SoCal, anyway.

I agree with lgteacher. We're in Southern CA, and our Japanese maples do really well but are in filtered light under old oak trees. I wouldn't put one in full sun here. Crepe myrtles are definitely an option for full sun. We also have a Carrotwood tree that's a nice evergreen. You might check with a local nursery for some suggestions. Take your photo with you.

The overall health of the tree looks fine - I see no obvious signs of disease. Tip growth die back or wilting of the foliage on terminal branch ends is not uncommon with maples and usually attributable to cultural (growing) conditions, like water stress, unusual weather events, mechanical damage, etc.

I seriously doubt you have much to worry about.........unless this is a very early indication of something more pathogenic, which is why I suggested monitoring the tree. But it currently resembles nothing more sinister than what has been discussed and no treatment at this time is advised.

Thank you! It does seem to be tip growth dieback. I don't know much about deciduous trees since there aren't many in southwest Florida. The red maple is one of the few native deciduous trees and it grows mostly in the swamp. Not many people plant them and even fewer know much about them. Thanks again. I love that tree and I feel better now!
