Can this African Violet be saved?
Comments (6)Your soil is also a little heavy. Lighten it up with 1/3-1/2 perlite. I would remove the leaf stubs and re-pot it up to the bottom leaves. You may have to slice some off of the bottom of the rootball. The only time I slice at the bottom of the leaves is when I have a bug problem at the roots. Water lightly until you see new growth then water normally. And, as Aviolet says, your pot is much too big. Use one 1/3 the size of your violet which is going to be quite small. If you leave your violet with your friend again, tell her to ease up on the water. Linda This post was edited by whitelacey on Tue, Mar 4, 14 at 16:40...See MoreSecond try with African Violets
Comments (5)I use a light mix for all of my AVs, no manner what stage they are in. I wick water mature AVs, and have the leaves, new plantlets and small as long as they are no bigger than 2 1/2" pot with wicks, but onto capillary matting. Works very well for me. These things are definitely a bit addictive. I am not sure where in Texas you are, but there are some great clubs around - all of which just had their spring shows. I am in the Corpus Christi club. Finding a club to visit or an AV member to visit is one of the best ways to learn -- there is just something about seeing it in the "real" instead of talking about it. (plus a lot of times they will send you away with violets). Our Texas convention is going to be in Kerrville TX November 8-10 and it will include all of the Texas clubs. I will be happy to send you more information. Also, our local club has some good links to growing info at ccavs.org or there is LSAVC for Texas at lsavc.org - OR national at avsa.org. Hope to see you at a meeting or a show somewhere!! Marjorie in CC TX Here is a link that might be useful: Corpus Christi AVS...See MoreCan I revive my African Violet?
Comments (80)So ... you're looking to give your plants 10-12 hours of sunlight ... or fluorescent light or LED light ... per day. I keep my plants blooming with a combination of window light and fluorescent light. You can use cheap desk-lamps with CFL or LED bulbs. The light source (and/or window) should be no more than 1 foot away from your plants. P.S. To start a new thread, select the appropriate discussion category (in this case, African Violets) and start a new question/comment ... Desk-lamp CFL bulb...See MoreHelp me save my African Violets!
Comments (6)Not a bored person and not kidding about springtails - I am not sure why that is a logical conclusion. I don't know if they are spring tail for sure but I tried to look it up and they seems to match the description - they are tiny and white. I left them because I read this:"Tinier-than-average varieties are encountered inpotted indoor plants, but they restrict their activity to the soil & don't spread elsewhere in the house, & are NOT HARMFUL TO YOUR HOUSEPLANTS!" I joined to ask for help. Thank you to those with real suggestions....See MoreRosie1949
