How much does HGTV and current trends affect your choices?
Comments (55)I used to watch it. Some of it's first design shows were OK. But then it degenerated into more TV than design. When I found myself shouting at the screen over some crap they inflicted on someone or they had some self important and indulgent teenagers searching for million dollar homes, I quit watching. Unfortunately, it does seem to be popular with many of my clients. And I have to disabuse them of the notion that a kitchen can be done on 2K in 2 days. Even on one of the shows that actually does discuss a true kitchen budget, the labor numbers are always way low because they are subsidizing it. In the real world, there is no way that a 50K budget for a redo ends up with only 7K worth of labor costs. And, I think it's a huge disservice to their viewership to present such fiction cloaked as fact. "It's TV entertainment, not real life." is a line that I often have to repeat to people who didn't really do their research before beginning the process....See MoreWood vs Iron Balusters
Comments (3)I agree it is more a matter of style of the home. But "out West" here they are still used a *lot* in high-end homes, which are usually fairly ornate. That being said, do what you will love. You will be living there. Maybe you will start a NJ trend. :)...See MorePaint wrought iron balusters?
Comments (11)McClark, yes the carpet is a solid tan (light tan). I love an oriental runner with exposed treads, especially coming down to a hardwood floor. Wish I knew how to post a picture, I'm going to do a search how to. Anyway, as you intuited, the stairs are very linear. No curves. Only one side of the stairs have exposed treads/risers. Due to the design of the staircase the "back" side of the stairs goes to the wall and the builder did not put exposed treads on that side, the carpet goes to the wall. IE, only one side of the tread is exposed So I wonder how an oriental runner would look in an asymmetrical arrangement like that. I will try to post a photo. We used to have a big dog, a German Shepherd, what a darling. Of course he scratched up the oak floors in two houses but I'd have him back in a minute! No replacement yet but nonetheless I am still a big dog lover and always will be. Marti, those really are pretty staircases, especially the curved silver one. They are clean and light and fairly contemporary. Mine is dark and fairly traditional, the dark being my main objection. I really have to post a photo. I will go look how to do that now. Thank you for finding and posting the photos....See MoreFun thread: What is your current kitchen related obsession?
Comments (74)Mine longtime kitchen obsession has been vintage cookware from the 50s or older. I have a lot of Guardian Service cookware. I love that the stuff is practically bombproof. At the thrift store the other day I found an ancient but still perfectly workable Presto 4 qt pressure cooker. The hammered texture on the lid caught my eye. It has beautiful wood handles too. I love that I can still get gaskets and overpressure plugs for it which I did because while the ones it had were serviceable they looked a little old. I also found a manual for it. Using some common sense and some internet research, it's incredibly easy to use. Since then I have experimented with making a few dishes in it. French onion soup is awesome in it and beans come out creamy textured. Presoaking gets better results though if in a hurry I can start from dry. Seasonings get right into the beans instead of staying in the broth. I am looking for a big oldie so i can use it at the next chili cook-off!...See Morefrench toast
