The plant I painted looks like a cross between BOTH of your finds: -- the Hakea Denticulata thick fuzzy leaves and the red+orange color of the flowers... -- the Holly-leaved Grevillea has the long colorful flowers growing from the bulb clusters but the leaves are more like holly, not as thick and fuzzy. Something in the Apiaceae. I'm not familiar with Carol23's suggestion but it looks a possibility from images.

lycopus - Yes, of course I will double check with my father-in-law before ingesting it. He's an expert on plant identification, but I haven't had him over for a visit for awhile. He'll be coming next week, so I'll ask him then. Thank you for the warning :) jaynine - Thank you! You got it. I read the description of the plant and it states that it starts off pink and then turns purple/blue. That is exactly what I have going on in my garden. I thought the pink ones were a different variety, but now I see that they are the immature form of it.
