Sorry for your loss!

It looks pretty wet there. I suggest you go out there and check for footprints and scat which might possibly give you some clues. Something did the same thing to MY strawberries that were growing on the edge of my raised bed and I suspected my lawn-mowing husband, but maybe I was wrong!

w/o askin a lot of questions I'm gonna say that maybe birds ate the strawberries, slugs ate the holes in the pole beans, and now for 1 question - are those two diff tomato plants or the same plant? IF it's the same plant I'm gonna have to go with birds again, maybe crows?

Deer or woodchucks would have eaten the tomato plant and not left it behind.

To check for slugs go out after sundown with a flashlight.

Is it so wet because of a heavy storm? If so the tomato plant could just have broken in the wind since it wasn't staked or anything. The strip left attached would indicate wind breaking to me.

The bean damage is minor and could also be storm damage or possibly slugs or beetles or any number of other things that only your exploration will ID. But if no further damage they should recover fine.

Something clearly ate the berries and curiously without breaking any stems it appears or leaving any remains. IME that usually requires a full berry plucking motion just as people would use to pick them. So unless your had a 2 legged visitor I'd consider big birds too.

Tomato plants and beans could sure use some mulching and stakes or cages for the tomato plants.

Don't get too discouraged. It happens to all of us and surprisingly most things recover. You'll likely even see some new growth develop from the tomato plant.

Tomato could be wind damage I suppose, it was windy the day before but I am having a hard time believing it was that...

I am planning to stake the tomatoes soon... beans will be climbing shortly so they'll be ok. Mulching is coming as well, was hoping to get my seeds sprouted first before I mulch. I still have some zinnias trying to pop through.

The tomato plant was left, gumby, just 1 casualty there... so you're right, could've been a bird.

All I know is my yard runs the gamut of critter appearances, we have woodchucks, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks... a deer did hop the 5' fence which encloses our yard this winter. So yeah, pretty discouraging :( Still, I try. I was thinking of staking some zest soap bars in random areas of the veggie garden, maybe the scent will ward them off?

I would use bird netting for the strawberries. That will deter birds and other rodents, if sealed properly. Also, never underestimate a squirrel :-) They wouldn't do that to your tomato plants, but they do eat a large variety of things, and love to dig and bury nuts. Especially where the dirt is easy to dig(garden beds :-/).
