Dead - New Growth

Hi,

I have a 7-8' frasier fir i planted last fall and through the winter, i had some of the tips die off on it. It looks like a majority of it is/was that previous springs new growth but i can see some die off on older parts of the branch too. A majority is new though. Any thoughts on this pther than bad luck? I've trimmed a lot of it off back to the connection point in the hopes is re blooms from there next spring.

It does have new growth this Spring though so its still alive and well.

the thought that a 7 top 8 foot tree could be moved all over town.. without some minor damage ... is way out there ...

you are way to involved with your BRAND NEW LARGE TRANSPLANTS ...

read the link about watering ... and that is all you need worry about this year.. and next ... and after that.. they should be rather bulletproof ...

also ... interior browning.. and shedding of needles is completely normal.;... and increased by transplant.. especially on a large transplant.. double if a ball and burlap ... and triple if a bad winter.. depending on where you are ... just focus on the normal part ... and on some level.. expect such this fall or winter ... if it happens.. snap us some pix.. and ask then ...

now read up on watering .... if you wish to discuss such.;. include what type of soil you have ...

Thanks again Ken, I've planted 12 evergreens since last fall (7 in fall and 5 this spring) and all were B&B and 7-9' ers.......quite the chore but it needed to be done. I'm having really good luck with them for the most part, only one replacement. I read through your link and believe i've got my basis covered. My soil is a sandy mix, holes were dug 5' by 2' and i did not use any amendments. Watering is every other day for their first 2-3 weeks then they get a good deep watering once a week from there on out and i may do more given the heat. The weekly watering are via a soaker hose and these trees are mulched. I can see the root flare as well so short of a major drought this summer I'm hoping they all make it. The burnt tips i'm dealing with here are likely due to the wind IMO.......not only was it a new transplant, It is in a little bit of a wind way so i should have put up a burlap screen but i forgot.

Hi Annececilia and Michaela, It is so good and encouraging to know that these roses may still be growing (and they are definitely not dead). Similar to you, I have cut off all the dead canes last weekend. I will feed them today and keep them appropriately watered (not an issue with our spring weather so far this year). Hopefully new growth will continue. My two pink double knockouts (in a different part of the property) are doing fine and there are good new growth already. I probably will not plant new and tall annuals right next to them so the roses can receive good sun light and nutrients. I am thinking using a couple of pots strategically placed to create some colors needed for the garden while not create competition for the roses. Thank you Alan for the advice. We are not that far from eachother, I live in Keystone. Small world. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I tested one of the branches and it doesn't snap like a dead branch would. It bends and I had to use a bit of effort to actually snap it in two. It looks dead and dried up inside, but it's still alive and I can smell the lemon, quite strong too. I knew that the Key lime was the most cold sensitive, although didn't find out about it until a few days after I planted it in the ground, when I went back to the nursery for another non-citrus fruit tree that I have. Believe it or not, even though it is quite small, it is sprouting new growth quicker than my Meyer is. The first year it gave very small limes, that were close to ripening, but fell. It hasn't flowered since then, just new foliage. Should I dig up the Key Lime and put it in a pot? Or leave it until fall arrives and pot it and leave it? We did have a few very cold nights for N. Fl and I did cover them. Just wondering if that would do the lime good for wintertime and to help it grow without worries. If it would be better off in a pot year round instead of in the ground. I also have been clearing an area around all of my trees, so they do not have to compete with the grass and weeds, that may help them out quite a bit with nutrients. I left it alone during winter to help keep roots a bit warmer. I will leave the branches alone until at least April to see what happens. I checked on my Valencia yesterday as well and on two of the branches at the very tips to approx. 3-4" down, it appears to be burned, and the rest of the branch is brown and looks to be dead. Could this be sunburn due to lack of water? They were like that before I applied fertilizer, so it is not due to that. Thank you all so much for the help! Christine

I had over watered when I was living on my mom's property with them being there, now I have my own house and I have added to the irises because I have more space. A friend was able to save my irises and I have both my old irises and new irises doing well. I have only lost two irises this year and they were both new from the hybridizer and they had weak rhizomes from the start. right now I have fourteen of the origional Sixteen left and they are doing well. I water twice a week. Ussually Wednesdays and Sundays and they seem to be doing extremely well. Infact I am getting new growth on many of my irises. It is very common here as well. The last two winters were mild enough that two years ago, I had almost no bloomage from the old wood hydrangeas. Then last winter I had some improvement but still plenty of no bloom hydrangeas. This winter was so miiiild that some hydrangeas did not go dormant and now I am seeing good bloomage from all (except paniculatas that will bloom later). The ups and down of the temperatures cause most of the problems here. That wakes the plants from the slumber and if the warm temps are followed by a crash below freezing, the stems are toast.

depending on how long you water ... every other day is way too much ...

if i planted in my spring cool moist sand .. and thoroughly soaked them in ... my finger would tell me.. they probably would not need more water until almost july ... thats with 16 years of watering on this sand ... and with mulch ...

use your finger.. and do not water.. until its drying down about 2 inches.. of the soil start feeling warm ... when it starts warming.. it will be drying soon ... [test not only the ball ... but also at teh interface between native soil and the ball .. every tree]

now i wouldnt cut them off completely.. since you have been babying them ... but how about you stick your finger in there.. or use a hand trowel to 3 inches ... to test ... and then walk away for a week .. and check again ... report then ... and lets see what you find ..

it will all be new to me.. since i will have completely forgotten all this by then .. lol ...

Thanks Ken - the every 2-3 days was only for the first 2 or so weeks and then I've backed off to once a week, slow and deep. I will look for the finger test at that weekly mark and let you know what it looks like and report back.
