Last year, I started seedlings, in disposable seed starting trays, on the heating mat, with the clear plastic dome. When they were too tall for the dome, I transferred them into bigger pots and placed the seedlings into my cool, 65 degrees F, house air. Nearly every one died. The temp shock was too much. Be careful with that - I think I cried. The younger the sprouts are, the more heat and humidity they need. Peppers usually like it warmer then tomatoes. Transferring them to too cool/dry of an environment before they have developed the roots can be deadly. I hope to never repeat that mistake. Happy Gardening -

Don't overlook the Jenn-Air Fridges. They have been rated #1 for reliability by Consumer Reports since about 2005 (before they were bought by Maytag and subsequently Whirlpool). Even today they are still rated # 1 as far as built in Fridges are concerned. SZ usted to be rated "Dead last" reliability, but they have managed to "Climb off the bottom", now. SZ is apparently still (they went back) to the old On/off style compressors, while virtually every other Fridge, (Miele, Lebherr,Most the Whirpool Family--etc etc), use the variable speed compressors. One does not need 2 separate compressors to keep veggies fruits etc etc to last longer---plenty of "Brags --- blah blah blah---etc etc as to how long the JA keeps food, as well as most any other New Fridge. I would only buy the JA, however, if I could find a "Deal", IE Craig's List, Ebay, Demo Model etc etc on the JA. Good Luck on your hunt. I think you will be happier with a shallower fridge as you won't (as one poster put it) have "Chemical Experiments" ((Paraphrasing)), going on in the very back recesses of the older style deep fridges!!! I am reading through a LOT of posts quickly, so hope I'm not stepping on toes...But I don't understand how this became about the island. I understand your frustration with the rabbit trail a bit, Breezy, as even though it's all well-intended, we all know that one change begets many more, and cabinets are already built and going in. It's not really an option, at least, mental health wise, to undo decisions that don't need to be, and weren't worrying you any more. If the chosen fridge won't fit in the hole, it seems the hole must change, or the fridge. If the hole can't change, it leaves the fridge. Believe me, I know what it's like to re-research and choose appliances you thought you'd decided on, but there are lots of choices out there. I like Bmore's suggestion of adding a smaller unit to the island if need be...Or maybe somewhere else. But I know that also starts the chain of changes after you've worked so hard on the storage layout. Mostly, glad to see Bmore back! :-) To the exact point of the OP...It seems the feedback you're getting about Monogram fridges is pretty positive and no reason I see to dismiss those options, even after my own frustration with Monogram. Sounds like they do better with fridges than ovens... Try not to let all of this get to you. The other issues listed in your life come out far ahead on the priority list, as you know, and this is a little blip. It piles on, but breathe and take a break, as necessary, as others have advised. It's a great blessing to have a new kitchen and to have choices. Not a lecture, but hoping you can hang in there. LOL, Kellie. Normally I direct sow, but maybe starting in containers outside could work. I would have to think of a place that gets enough sun, but not so much sun or the hatched seedlings will dry out for sure. I don't leave until 2nd week of Oct and normally things I have direct sowed are popping up within that 1st week, but I am trying some new stuff I never did before and this is fall not spring so maybe fall seedlings take longer. If I get my butt in fast enough gear I could divide the packets into 3rds and do an experiment direct sow, containers and the last 3rd when we get back home. Ohh to be so organized. Damn this working for a living, it so gets in the way! Lol.
