hellebore leaves turned black

my large hellebore.. i think brandywine pink... bloomed well in spring, but now one large side of the plant's leaves have turned all black.. still shiny, intact leaves, but black.. do you know what it is or what i should do? We have had quite a lot of rain this year..

Can you post a photo? Hellebores are prone to a number of fungal issues but each presents a bit differently. And I don't want to alarm you but there is also a virus known as 'hellebore black death". Or it could be something as benign as sooty mold or poor drainage. Just no way to tell without a photo to confirm.

I earlier today just cut all the affected leaves off (should i cut the stems to the ground?) All the rest of the leaves look fine. I will try to post a pic if it comes back. Thanks so much for your response.

Not enough sunlight can cause the leaves to go black. However, cut off pieces you are trying to root out can't handle intense amounts of light, so if they are already blackening, they will likely not survive. Best advice: put somewhere cool or cold with moderate amounts of light and maintain a fairly high level of humidity to help get them through this difficult time. For the main plant, it needs full sun. lowering the pH of the soil a little bit might help, keep the roots moist but not waterlogged. Most likely all the leaves will go black, but if you're lucky the plant might send out some new green leaves later.

"Essex near Chelmsford" is most likely in the United Kingdom, England. What has your weather there been like? Wet? Dry? Warmer than normal? Colder than normal? This might be a fungal disease or an environmental condition. Difficult to know without a lot more information.

I also have this problem. I planted them 6 months ago, they flourished outside (even got flowers), then were moved inside as the temp. became cooler. I have them now under artificial light (where I first started them 6 months ago), and they are growing but the leaves turn black and fall off after reaching an inch or two in size. I suspect some watering issues, change in light, as well as temp. Aka stress. Just not sure if they are going to make it. Also, I they do need nutrients from time to time, which I have not done. I don't have any answers - just throwing out the things I am considering and still looking for more definitive answers.

Your container looks too small for a tree, even a baby tree. The roots look girdled. It means they have been circling the base of the tree just below the surface, because they can't spread in this small container. Girdling roots are petty much a death sentence for a tree because they choke off the flow of water to the top of the tree. But I've heard that some folks have been successful in fixing this condition by cutting the roots. I'll let others weigh in on that. In the long run, however, you will have to plant this tree outside. It's a fun project, but avocados are not houseplants. It may stay alive but will not thrive.

You can cut the old foliage entirely to the ground. Apart from removing more of the diseased material the stalks sticking up must look horrible and will die off anyway eventually. Many of us do that in summer even if the foliage is not diseased.
