Woke up to a black screen. New monitor?

I finally installed Win10 last week. it seemed to be fine. Today I got up to a black screen, I checked everything. The computer seems fine, it's not new and the monitor is even older, ts about 10 years old but has worked perfectly until now. So I guess it's history.
My question is, should I just buy a new monitor? I'm worried that the same thing could happen or would I be better off to just buy a new computer at the same time? My desktop is a Dell XPS that is about 4 yrs old and has never given me a problem, running Win7. I wish I had never tried to switch to Win 10.

Please see some of the possible solutions here, I don't think we are looking at a monitor problem but a somewhat common black screen issue with Win 10.

If your XPS is listed below, your upgrade will work fine. If it's not listed, Dell does not recommend a Win10 upgrade due to old drivers that will not be updated by Dell.

If your computer model is not listed, Dell is not testing the device,
drivers have not been updated for that model, and Dell does not
recommended an upgrade to Windows 10.

Mike - Thanks for the testimony. The Little Giant Low Water shut off was the one I was looking at. I'll feel better now about sending off my hard-earned $$$ for it. jalal - I have 2 blue 20 gal tubs that I fill up with declorinated water and add Stress Coat. Then I let them sit to adjust to a temperature close to the pond water. I put 2 in the pond yesterday and 2 in this morning. I'll do the same tomorrow. Eventually I'll have a pond full of water, hopefully I'll still have live fish. As a temporary measure I put a piece of screen up to prevent any more plant pieces from going into the outflow tube. I am also going to change the outflow to something that can't clog, but for right now, I think things are stable. I don't think the problem is the plants as much as a design failure (experience is the best teacher, after all!). The reason I choose the skippy I did was so that I could have the plants and, darn it all, I'm going to have them come hell or high water - or in this case, low water.!! hahaha Anne

Shaddy, if you can get a faster computer and have the tech put XP on it, I think you'd be very happy. Since I don't have or intend to go to Vista anytime soon, I can't say anything about that. I find XP to be so much more stable than Windows 98 was, and all my old programs that I used with 98 work on XP. If your computer activities are just those things you mention, then XP is fine. I doubt it would cost you any more to have XP than to have 98, and since MS no longer supports 98 with security updates, I would NEVER buy a new machine with 98 on it. As far as the monitor, I have no idea what the problem is, but you would definitely enjoy a nice large LCD monitor, and it would be light weight and not take up all that space that a CRT does (I'm assuming a monitor circa 1999 is a CRT).

Thanks for all the help. I've been fooling around with this for a few days. Mikies suggestion seems to be working. I was able to minimize the screen and stretch it. Its not perfect but at least I can see my tool bar now and see the slider on the right. If I try to pull the bottom down close to the icons, the top of the screen goes off the edge. So I will use it the way it is with the bottom of the screen a bit too short. Doesn't matter. I needed to get to the slider and the above address bar, etc. This monitor is an old one probably 7 years. From an old desktop. I hooked it to the new laptop. I don't understand how to fix the resolution nor the different cables. I'm leaving it the way it is, as it is now functional. Thank you soooo much! You guys are the best!! Jane

Numerous driver incompatibilities and goofy settings (as described in the link by zep516) are among the common problems many Windows 10 updaters have experienced. One of my PCs had a manufacturer's message popup saying in so many words - "Don't upgrade this PC to W10, the drivers won't work and your PC will become inoperable"

As described in another thread, problems like this are why the big (and well- informed) private and public employers intentionally DON'T update their IT software when there's no benefit to do so and a risk of problems. It's senseless.

Can you roll back your PC to the earlier Windows version? That would be my recommendation.

f can ever get the black screen to go away, I'll try to roll back my computer

In the meantime, I'll try to figure out what I want in a new one.

After rebooting W10, I had a "black" screen. Oh boy. Thought it might be installing updates (W7 showed the installations on the screen) so did something else, came back & everything was OK. Don't think it sounds like your issue, tho.
