Saucer Sled Fairy Garden - Trying Moss
Comments (13)Hi all! Happy first day of Spring - especially for we northerners!!! Record snowfalls, record days below zero, that's what we had here in CT. I'm anxious about my saucer garden, but still optimistic. I took the last pix yesterday - the last day of winter. I can't yet get any closer than that pix shows but from what I can see, it's only the Blue Star Creeper that looks iffy to me. The three pix below are from Jan 21, Feb 14, and Mar 19, 2014. I still have a frozen stream along the path. In anticipation of success for this saucer experiment, let me add a few notes and tips that I forgot to include above. On my second try I used a lot of local dirt over the base of potting soil. Seems happier - potting soil not earthy enough? This sled is made of aluminum. I don't know about plastic - might its chemicals leach into the dirt over time? Maybe a year or two would be okay? I don't know - anybody else? Since last summer I water (drizzle) with rain water only, and only when needed, concentrating on the drier perimeter, letting it soak to the center. All that said, I'll probably finish this thread with one more pix in early summer - with critters. As for the rest of my time in here - I'm still learning from everyone else - with very little expertise. Onward and upward for us all - flowers included! -- K...See MoreNeed easy way to drain runoff from containers in apartment
Comments (11)I will use bottle caps to lift the container so it isn't sitting flat on the bottom to allow the water to soak into the container. Some use other devices to lift container from the saucer. I let the water evaporate and I don't worry that it will cause any perched water in the container. . I also would use a turkey Baster if needed before I found the caps to lift containers. I will place around four or so water caps to lift but it Depends on the size of the container. If its a large heavy container.. You will have to use something stronger. Laura...See MoreSiphoning - bwb peaches?
Comments (8)Many of us set up outdoor canning kitchens this time of year and there are lots of past discussions here about the various stove/burner models used. Put 'propane cooker' in the search bar here. What works best depends on (1) the type of pot used, (2) the type of canning done (BWB vs. PC), and (3) the BTU output of the unit. The typical Coleman camping stove is low heat/low BTU output and the burner area is also somewhat small. So while it can work of small pots of BWB canning it doesn't work well for large pots of PCs. It is difficult to center them over the burner area provided and you have to set the heat all the way up to reach processing temps. That burns through a lot of fuel (which isn't cheap) fairly quickly. So you have to refill the gas part way through any long processing times. No problem for the relatively short BWB processing times like 10-25 min. as long as you can wait the 30 min time for it to get that much water up to boiling. If you begin with hot water from the stove indoors it can be done. But pressure canning - nope - unless it is a small enough PC to fit and you can guarantee you won't run out of gas 1/2 way through. Follow me? Fish and turkey fryers on the other hand often get too hot and can melt the pot (12,000 BTU is the recommended max) plus they usually don't have adequate flame control adjustments. Side burners on gas grills usually won't hold the weight and also have some BTU limitations. Having tried most all of them, this is what I use and with a 20 lb propane bottle I can get most all my canning done with only 1 refill all season. Double burner camping stove The burners are 30,000 BTU but fully adjustable of you can easily keep them hot enough but not too hot. If you want a single burner then this one is what I used for several years, also fully adjustable. Single burner propane cooker Dave...See MoreWater in my Speed Queen FL dispenser drawer
Comments (24)I have the AFN50RSP113TW01 model with the most basic knob controls. It has the same problem. I believe the dispenser design is the same on all the newer Speed Queen front loaders. Per the user's guide, "the fabric softener will be dispensed during the last rinse stage", but the softener dispenses as soon as any water is added to the tub. Even if you wait until the initial tub fill, the softener gets dispensed as soon as the first rinse starts....See More- 7 years ago
