If you were moving and could only take 5 with you...
Comments (16)zyperiris, I am on my third 'Apple Blossom' :-) Not because they haven't done well - only because I can't imagine my garden without one! The first had to to be removed when I relandscaped my front yard and transplanting was not an option (much too large to move). I immediately replanted another in a different location. And now that I have moved to a new garden, 'Apple Blossom' was the first clem I purchased for my new location. This can get to be a big vine - 25-30' is not out of line. And it is evergreen, so can get heavy and will need a sturdy support system. It blooms very early - mine is just starting to open now. Buds are a deep pink and open to blush pink flowers -- LOTS of them! And it is moderately fragrant as well. It is not prone to wilt and is more shade tolerant than many choices. And since it is a type I, no pruning is necessary. Should you need to control size, you should prune immediately after flowering. This is what it looks like in full bloom: There is also a white flowered armandii, commonly sold as 'Snowdrift'. It tends to be a bit more widely available than 'Apple Blossom'....See MoreCan you take your fish w/ you when you move?
Comments (2)I've trasported my large koi before by purchasing a large tuperware bin with a lid. Place the fish's pond water in the bin about 1/3 to 1/2 full, then add your fish. In the lid, you'll need to puncture a tiny hole for an air tube. Run the air tube to the bottom of the tub under the water and seal the lid on tightly. I used heavy duty duct tape to prevent any splashing. Then attach the air tube to a battery operated air pump that you can get at any aquarium store. Don't forget to bring along extra batteries. It was a bumpy ride but all of my fish survived it. P.S. You might want to do the same with the Beta in a separate container or your lap could end up soaked every time you hit a bump in the road! It also may be best to put your poor old kitty in a covered cat carrier for the trip as well. The stress of riding in a moving vehicle for an old cat could result in a lap full of much worse than water! (Been there too, unfortunately)! Good luck with your move....See MoreWould You if you knew you could never move back? (kinda long read)
Comments (62)How long will the RE boom last in California? Isn't it down a bit already? My advice: Take the money and run. Invest it. Rent in Omaha until you're sure about the work and the location. One thing at a time. This is actually three things: New location. New job for DH. New job for you. Put parenting on hold for a year. If you won't/can't bear children, you can ignore the ticking clock for a while. I'm laughing my head off about 'bugs' in the Midwest. What? I'll show you bugs! Go to Hawaii. Go anywhere there's no hard freeze. (Not that climate isn't changing everywhere. Chicago had a single snowfall Jan. - Mar. Miami is flooding while the rest of Florida burns; ETC!) Rent first is good advice for anyone who can afford it when relocating. Senior friends moved to Arizona, where they liked the weather, but not the 'black helicopter' vibe. Years ago one of DH's friends moved to Atlanta, where they discovered they were unacceptable Damn Yankees. We visited friends from suburban Chicago at their gorgeous home in Atherton, California; they moved 'home' after two years, not wanting that atmosphere for their young boys. My uncle and his bride lived Kauai as newlyweds; moved to the mainland to expose their boys to life beyond 'Surf's Up'. Right now there seems more polarization than ever, with Red State/Blue State. (We need a return visit from Dr. Seuss!)...See MoreWhich would you take with you
Comments (33)I relocated to The Netherlands from the UK in November last year.... key consideration in the search for new accommodation was space to grow my plants. I took five roses with me: old bourbon rose 'Madame Isaac Pereire', old hybrid perpetual rose 'Empereur du Maroc', Delbard rose 'Chartreuse de Parme' and two David Austins: 'Olivia Rose Austin' and 'Gertrude Jekyll' I have to say, I'd probably choose them in that order- for all the susceptibility to powdery mildew especially, and black spot, I cannot be without Madam Isaac Pereire- those huge, opulent, fuchsia blooms with that intoxicating fruity perfume have become the hallmark of the season for me! I've got lots of others back in the UK and I will extract them at some point but this one had to come with me to keep me company. :) As for Empereur du Maroc, that one demands attention but BOY is it worth it!! The blooms a crowded....CROWDED with velvety, DARK red, petals, arranged in whorls that you just have to see to understand....and one whiff of that classic old rose perfume and you'll just pass out. It also stand up to rain like a champion- frankly, there are so many petals that I don't imagine there would be a problem. It's like opening a bottle of concentrated old rose essence. And Delbard at his best gave us that Chartreuse de Parme, more hybrid tea in its growth but wow- the size of the flowers and the strong, fruity perfume....so yeah. Oh, and the David Austins speak for themselves....though I do need 'Jude the Obscure' back in my life. For me, the fragrance is everything! :)...See MoreBarb Ure Drouillard 6b Canada
