planting different kinds of corn in same row?

Our corn did not come up very well. There are many plants missing in the rows, but the ones that are up are about 2 inches tall right now. Can I plant a different variety of corn in those missing areas, or will that screw up the pollinating, or anything else. I don't have a second pack of the original variety, but have 2 other varieties I haven't planted yet. that I would like to plant in those openings.

Also, I save some corn from last year that I bought from a vendor that was SOOOO tasty but she wouldn't give me the name of the variety. I planted those seeds this year. I was told that the seed/plant will not be the same as the original kind. Do those plants revert back to something else, or what happens.

Thank you in advance for any input you may have.
