Why didn't my rhodo bloom?

I planted my first rhodo last year. It was a medium sized specimen and covered in red flowers at the time. This year it produced only 3 buds, only 2 of which developed enough to open. It's growing on the north side of my house between 2 large arbor vitaes. It appears very healthy and I fertilized it when it was planted and again in early spring. Could it be in too much shade? I thought they were good shade plants. Also, there was a heavy frost in April, just when the tulips had started growing and we'd had weeks of warm temperatures. At the time, my forsythia was just about to flower. The frost killed or disfigured at least 70 % of the blooms on the forsythia. Back then, the rhodo's buds were very undeveloped, so I never thought they could be harmed, but is it possible that the week of sudden freezing temperatures killed all the buds on my rhododendron?
