Help! Why didn't my fruit trees bloom this year???
Comments (9)Well, I didn't prune the two older ones (Bartlett Pear and Honeycrisp) any more than I did last year, which is to say, lightly-to-moderately pruned and they flowered fine last year... and I BARELY pruned the two younger apple trees, since they did not have much growth to begin with.... I just can't imagine how I would have pruned off every single branch with flowering capability on 4 different trees, unless I really pruned them super heavily, which I didn't. The Honeycrisp apple got the most pruning this year, but I followed various tutorials and felt I was actually probably not taking enough off. But I am new to this so I guess I could be wrong! In any case, the other 3 only got very lightly pruned. And, no, no flower buds ever showed up at all. I have to get my yard ready for a delivery of 10 tons of gravel thats on its way, but I'll try to take some photos later on so you can see how much I pruned....See MoreWhy didn't my columbine bloom?
Comments (1)The A. canadensis bloomed weakly this year because May was quite droughty and I don't water where they are growing. But the did bloom. When I start columbine from seed, they sometimes don't bloom the 2nd year, if I get don't get the seedlings planted out until mid-late the first year. Have no idea why established plants that have bloomed for years would not bloom! Very odd....See MoreWhy didn't my hostas bloom?
Comments (3)I think your hostas are still young. They'll take a couple years to establish, then they'll bloom. Mine did not bloom the first year either, but I can't quite remember when they started to bloom. The big ones I have are plantaginea, 'Elegans', 'Sum & Substance' & 'Kossa Regal'. 'Elegans' & 'Kossa Regal' took their sweet time. The first 2-3 years I was asking myself what's the fuss about. Now they are huge and bloom reliably every year....See MoreWhy didn't my Annabelle hydrangea bloom this year?
Comments (4)I have an 'Annabelle' that flowers very well for me. Care instructions for this plant tells me to prune hard in winter, which I usually do in Feb when I can see a tiny bit of which buds look good. I prune to about a foot off the ground simply because I end up with the size of plant I want for the bed (about 4'). I give it water during dry hot periods but it puts up with a fair bit of neglect. It is on the north side of my garage and gets a bit of protection under the eaves, so this helps with the blooms flopping over after the rain. Sometimes after watering, I give them a shake and they bounce back up. I really love this plant because the flowers last so long and keep a nice white colour fairly late into the year. It's very easy & low maintenance. The pale green foliage & delicate blooms also brighten up the border. One thing I've learned over the years is that plants sometimes need a period to get happy in their new home. My personal experience is that in about the 3rd year, plants really start to take off. Patience, patience :) http://www.mobot.org/gardeninghelp/plantfinder/Plant.asp?code=S940...See Morebuford
