If you know of a good vet that treats birds - and you are prepared to spend a bundle - then this would provide you with the best advice. In the meantime, my inexpert advice is that a four year old is not very heavy and the injury will probably heal on its own. Was your daughter wearing hard shoes and was the gosling on bedding (straw or wood shavings) or on a hard surface. That might make a difference. Can you detect any abnormal heat at the site of the injury, compared to the sound leg? Last year (to my shame) I stepped right on a day-old chick. I'm no lightweight and I was sure the poor thing was a goner. But a day or two later it was just fine. I assume that the deep bedding saved it from worse injury. In your place I would just keep it with its buddy in the brooder box and try to limit how far it has to go for food and water. Make sure that if it falls into the water dish it is not going to drown. I put stones in my water dishes as a precaution, just leaving enough room for the goslings to dip their heads. If you are using a heat lamp or other source of heat, make sure that the gosling can get under it and away from it. It's had a rough start: getting out of the shell, travelling to a new home, and then being stepped on. Let it rest as much as it needs to. Chances are good that with a few days rest and quiet, it will heal just fine on its own. Do reassure your daughter that accidents sometimes happen and that it is not her fault. If she is a calm child, let her help feed the goslings so that she feels part of "making it better", but if she is one of the excitable types, this might not be a good idea right now. There are several goose enthusiasts who post here and if you read some of the previous threads, you will be amused and informed by our goose-stories. Make sure it is something like a sprain and not Bumblefoot or some kind of injury--pick her up and thoroughly check her feet and legs over, especially the pads. See if she yelps or jumps when you feel her legs, check to make sure she bends the leg and grips with her foot--it will help you determine where the problem lies. I once had a large, heavy hen who hurt one of her legs by leaping off the roost one morning in a fit of high spirits. It took a LONG time to heal since she couldn't very well stay off of it, and actually I suspected a slight fracture. Since she was kind of wild and was getting around OK, I let her alone and she eventually healed up and was fine. Velvet ~:>

Hi everyone....thanks again for the responses. I'm sad to say that the Quaker parrot did not survive. It died on it's own at the avian clinic this evening after incubation care and other vet stuff. I'm really bummed. :( Apparently, it had major internal injuries and some of the swelling put pressure on the spine which caused the paralysis. They think it flew into the side of a building or something - but not recently...several days ago. The vet also confirmed it was actually a wild parrot and NOT a pet/tamed parrot. The extent of its injuries is what made it seem so docile and tame. The eyes and feet indicate tame or wild (...you probably already know this Manature) - dark eyes/feet are wild parrot indicators. I know I tried and so did the others to help (the Florida West Coast Avian Society rescue group tried and the vet clinic). It just sucks sometimes that you can't save them all no matter what you do. :( Anyway, this is the name of the group that will do parrot rescue and have a bird focus. I would suggest finding your local wildlife rehabilitator; here's a link from the humane society to illinois rehabilitators: http://web.extension.illinois.edu/wildlife/files/WildlifeRehabbersSheet.pdf When moving bats, use thick gloves or a towel to pick it up only if necessary (we had some confused babies get into our house, and that's how the wildlife guy removed them for us). If it isn't actually injured, make sure to put it back outside somewhere high up (like on top of a bush); bats have trouble taking off from the ground, since they more glide than fly -- if they are on the ground, they have to run a long way in order to take off. As for what bats eat ... I think the little brown bats around here eat mosquitos, but they might eat other things, too. It might eat fruit or bugs. I would also keep it away from any other animals and clean any areas that it is near thoroughly as they can also carry things like ringworm (which is actually a fungus, not a worm), and yes, humans can get ringworm, too. Little brown bats have recently had issues with white nose syndrome, which I don't recall whether it's a fungus or something else, but it exhibits as white stuff on the nose of the bat, as the name implies. It does bat things to colonies, and I think it's fatal, so if the bat has white on its nose, that would be very bad and probably best to give it over the the center.
