Mystery holes in cotton knits
Comments (130)What an interesting thread. I've had these holes appearing in my shirts, which has been costing me money to replace and headaches to deal with. At first, I blamed my desk at work for creating abrasion points. The desk is old (20+ years) and has edges that have degraded. I initially put scotch tape over the rough edges that quickly wore through so thought I had confirmed the source. I then bought 5 foot long plastic corner protectors, so thought I had solved the problem. Not so. The holes persisted in more shirts (both thrifted and new ones). The final straw was when I saw the holes in a nightgown. How is that possible? I am not inclined to do much in my nightgown--other than sleep. I don't see the belly button protein theory as the issue given that I have psoriasis so there would be more than that one spot vulnerable. Then I thought weight gain (blame COVID and aging). I don't wear belts often so can't blame that. Also my jean wearing has been next to nothing since the weight gain and limited access for shopping so no jean snaps in use. The nightgown holes cancel out the seat belt theory for me. That leaves me to consider the washer, detergent, toothpaste splatter, or pill bugs. I have seen pill bugs in the past, but why would they be active only recently and not all these years? Washer is not an option for me as I've seen damage from an old washer and it does not restrict itself to one small area. Same for detergent. So, what's left? Cheaper cotton? But why only in the one spot? It's quite the mystery....See MoreWhat type of flooring was originally installed in 1940s kitchens?
Comments (27)I would like to inform all that we have a lovely second home that has a full living basement that was built in mid 1940's. The floor and outer walls are cement. thick. the floors through this basement dwelling. (close to 2000 square feet.) were covered with apprx 9"x9 " Brown and beige marble looking tiles in some of the rooms and Dark green and light green marble looking tile in rest of rooms. They had to be scrubbed clean, rinsed and then waxed to look nice and they did but, anything wet ruin the beauty. While we were gone, We had a toilet water issue upstairs that run and filled the basement with 1 foot of water. Of course this soaked the tile up and also ruined the insulation and sand plaster on the walls. We rushed to get the mess cleaned up, took up all the tile without thinking about asbestos. We would like to know if any of you know what the content of these tile might have been, please inform us. It was easy to take the tile up and out. However, a lot of the tile left the black tar paper backing stuck to the floor. We are at the point of finishing this portion of this home, but, is the black stuff that is still sticking dangerous? or can we clip I t out ourselves. no one seems to know the content. we will not be putting any type of square tile back in. and do not want to have a problem with asbestos....See MoreWho Likes 1940's Tile, Anyway?
Comments (46)Maybe this thread isn't a troll after all... it reminds me of a foreclosure I looked at a couple of winters ago. The place had the original 1938 kitchen sink and wall/base cabinets along that wall. They were nice ones with glass windows and a big, farmhouse sink. I say "had" because now the kitchen has a bunch of generic big box cabinets. The original solid doors were replaced too, to put in hollow core prehung doors - I saw them at Habitat so the kitchen may have also made its was there as well. And of course... now they're having trouble selling it. This post was edited by schicksal on Thu, Apr 24, 14 at 8:33...See MoreHelp with stain on tub! I've tried everything!
Comments (19)I am so glad I found this page......I have well water and the rust is awful even though I use the salt that is suppose to prevent this. Because I haven't been able to find anything to get rid of it...the build up was really bad practically my whole tub and wall was orange. I would clean it even though I could not get rid of it. So I tried the bar keepers friend which I had this whole time under my kitchen sink and boy did it work!!! I am amazed and little annoyed that I had it but never thought to use it. So thank you, thank you, thank you and my tub thanks you!! :) I wish I had taken before and after photos....See More- 7 years ago
