Do you get your clothes altered?

Yesterday was an eye-opener for me at an alteration store. My gf invited me and my daughters to go along as her daughter got her wedding dress altered. We also had a junior bridesmaid and the mother of the bride who got their dresses altered, so we were there for about 2 hours. This shop does just about anything you would want sewn from wedding dresses, to pants, to costumes, to curtains, to seat covers. But the most amazing to me were the everyday people that had their clothes altered. While we were there, there was a constant flow of costumers in and out of the store. I've only had dresses altered for special occasions, so this was really new to me. The bride had bought 12 dress shirts at Walmart and was going to pay someone to embroidery them with monograms. The alteration place said they would match the price of the dress shirts and embroidery them for free. It was quite an amazing place.

Do you have a washing machine and dryer? Then you will be a lot happier if you get in the habit of washing them each day. You don't have to have a full load. If you need something to carry them from the pail to the washer, just use a plastic bucket. Rinse out the dry pail and let it air dry. A liner will just be one more thing to have to keep clean. Another way is to put all of the days collection along with any towels or sheets in the washer at night and let them rinse or soak. Then in the morning, add the night time diapers and anything soiled during the night and continue the with a regular wash. by the time that your baby gets older, and the mess is worse, you will be glad that you are in the habit of doing this.

I work in a high-tech company where most everyone is in their 20s and 30s. I'm a good 15 years older than anyone in my graphics team, including my manager. Ouch. As such, I really try not to dress in anything that might draw attention to my age. I try to be current without being trendy. And because I work closely with the officers and upper management of the company I have to look professional at all times. This means sensible tops, jackets, jewelry, slacks and pumps except on Casual Fridays when I wear a nice pair of jeans and a sweater or comfortable top. T-shirts are not allowed in our group, even though we are considered the "artsy, creative" kind who often throw caution to the wind when it comes to fashion. Jodi-

I use the freezer door handle and sometimes the warming drawer handle...the oven is "off limits" b/c my front door view is the ovens! Here are some towel threads...including the famous "towel pig"! I have altered dress pants for myself and my husband. My mom helped me make my prom dress and my wedding dress. My mother in law was kind enough to hem a bridesmaid dress for me when I was 8 months pregnant. It looks quite comical now, like a reverse train! I have also sewn dresses for my daughter's and myself but I've never used a store pattern. I'm very grateful that my mom taught me to sew and I've never needed to visit a tailor.
