How much of your own clothes do you sew?
Comments (7)I have a huge to-do list but haven't gotten to all I want to create. I'd sew everything I wear if I had the time! I'm only in my mid-30's but also hate most everthing out there. I;m a snob when it comes to fit, and can't stand to spend money on all the pants that have droopy seats, too-big legs, etc. As far as good patterns, I find McCall's fits the truest. BUT, what I really suggest is making muslums of the 3-4 basic pieces (shirt, pants, skirt, jacket) and make sure they fit you shape well. Get a pattern alteration book to help you with simple basic alts that will make a huge difference. Once you have acheived that, those 3-4 basic pattern pieces will becomw the patterns you use for everything Shorts, pants, LS and SS shirts, vests, etc. Most garments are constructe from the same patterns over and over again, with the style changes coming from fabrics, necklines, closures and opening, etc. Because once you find the shape that looks good on you, you will want to recreate it again & again. Why fuss around with a bucket if patterns? And I find it to be fun to create my own look this way. And I have learned so much! If you are really at a loss, do what I did after my body 'settled' after having children - go to some really high end stores and try on what you like (don't even look at price) If you like the fit, take notes in the dressing room & search for patterns that duplicate the look. That's much better than sewing an outfit up from scratch and then finding out you look like a damned petunia in a flower pot. (Yes,I did that. Wasted over 12 hours on one dress!) Good luck!...See MoreShow me your fireplace! Where do you store your firewood?
Comments (4)Wood stash is around the corner through the mud room in the garage. But we bring it in by the arm loads for the basket. At the old house we needed a log rack and a big stash in the house as the old wood stove was so inefficient. This one is very efficient so the basket works well for us, even though we had designed the space for a larger wood pile....thus why we extended the stone around to the side wall....See MoreWhere do you store your silverware? (How to solve this problem?)
Comments (21)regarding the frameless/inset question: Our cabinets are frameless. We used the Lee Valley drawer insert makers to make a custom flatware holder. These are much taller (3.5 inches) than a typical flatware organizer, so we have just filled it up with lots of flatware. We have service for 32 in ours, which we love. We never run out of flatware, even with a large group. We moved our flatware drawer from the end of the peninsula close to the eating area to a drawer next to the DW when we remodelled. We much prefer the new location, but it all depends on your kitchen layout and how you and your family operate in the kitchen. My kitchen is small (hence, the frameless cabinets) and my cleaning and prep zones overlap (sink, DW, drawers with flatware and utensils, corner cab, range - we prep between the range and sink). Both our old and new DWs had easy to grab silverware baskets. My teenage DS empties the DW, and moving the flatware drawer was one of his few requests with the remodel (surprisingly, he actually had good input!). It is much easier to put the flatware away in the new location. When I empty it (he has a tricky way of being busy/unavailable when the DW needs unloading...) I still pull out the basket and set it on the counter so I don't have to bend over. There are usually some non-flatware pieces in the basket (measuring spoons, small spatulas, small whisks, etc), and it is really nice to have the cooking utensils co-located with the flatware. I also find that I use quite a bit of flatware while prepping and cooking, so it's nice to have it nearby. The table setting thing that others are talking about got me thinking. I always set the table myself while I have some down-time during cooking. I think I do it that way because my dish storage is above where I prep and in the way of cooking, so I don't want to invite anyone into the kitchen when I'm cooking. So wise of you to think of this now! Good luck...See Morewhere/how do you store your silpats?
Comments (31)I haven't had the nerve to try Silpats on my induction yet. I used parchment fine for bacon, etc, then used it while making tortillas. The flat cast iron was heated hotter for longer, I guess, and the paper scorched badly. When I moved it, there was a cloudy area below it that didn't clean off. Freaked me out pretty severely, but I got some Cerambryte and took it back up 2 weeks later and the cloudy area came right off. I don't know what it was, it really didn't seem surficial, but it must have been. I've been nervous about trying that again, but maybe I'll do it with a Silpat next time, thanks!...See More
