Do you like your FD's pantry/deli drawer?
Comments (8)I love it, maybe because I don't think of it as just a deli/meat drawer, although it handles those foods too. I've used it so much that I'm relieved that it didn't break from too much weight. When something is easily crushed (or spilled, or knocked over) like boxes of berries, that's where I put it. Wide and relatively-flat things that can't take being stacked-upon, like cakes and cheesecakes, also go there. The front of the drawer is visible when closed, so it's a handy place to stick appetizers and leftovers and small things like bags of baby carrots so they don't get pushed back and forgotten. While the FDs do require more care to close than a one-door fridge, I find it less effort to open the two narrower doors than to swing out one large one....See MoreWhat do you wish you had in your walk-in pantry?
Comments (14)This is our present pantry built in the 1910's. Our washer and dry is opposite of the built in. In the future this will turn into a guest bath. My new pantry is under the stairs and I will have an L shape of shelves, etc. The back wall will have 16" built ins and the side will have 14" deep built ins with sliding glass windows at least 5' high for the uppers. This picture is taken from the half bath looking into the pantry. The finished space is actually 8 x 4 (when it was just studs I thought I measured 12') and starts after the bump out. I will have a shallow cabinet between the pantry and half bath (where the closer schoolhouse light fixture is located). My DH will be building my pantry. We'll buy Scherr doors for the lowers and probably glass doors for the far wall. We will probably have someone make the sliding windows. My kitchen is cherry buy I'm thinking of going oak for the pantry - I think it's a better period choice for our house. The kitchen is in the pre-1870's addition but the last major renovation was 1910's. I picked trim and many of my materials from that time frame for the kitchen....See MoreTrash - where do you keep yours and do you like it?
Comments (22)We also have much more recycles than trash. So I need a larger bin for recycle, and a small one for trash. I like the idea of keeping the trash smaller because it will get emptied more often too. I want to keep the pull out narrow so not to give up much cabinet space. So the trick is to find 2 trash can that are narrow, and together take up about 24" depth. The double bins I saw on Rev-a-shelf were all at least 12 - 15" wide, and much less than 24" deep. Also they are much shorter than under counter height, so not an efficient use of space. The photo from Judydel looks closest to what I want. What other brands should I look at? We also started composting recently. Right now I just use an old bread bag to collect stuff during the day, and then dump it in the compost bin after dinner clean-up. My BFF was composting years before it was fashionable. She didn't even have a disposal. She keep a small pretty ceramic pot w/lid on her counter next to the sink. She lined it with a bread bag, and collected her veggie scraps there. Every other day she would dump the contents into the compost pile. So I plan on getting a "compost pot" for my counter too....See Moredo you like you kitchen pantry cabinet?
Comments (27)mdln -- on the pantry cabinet with the drawers -- I really like the look. However, our architect had also suggested using drawers as the pantry base, but I wasn't sure. We have some drawers in our current kitchen, so I cleared them out and put pantry items in them to check it out -- I realized that it wouldn't work for us for the items we wanted to store there, it was too hard to see the items from the top (e.g., all the sup cans looked the same). I'm sure that drawers work great for certain products, especially ones that are not that deep. But I'd suggest trying it out for yourself to see how it feels to you....See Moregldcc
