Old Toro Personal Pace Self Propel stopped working
Comments (6)You first need to see if it still has a belt that is on both pulleys. If belt is there, push down on the sliding handle to see if the belt gets tighter. Now find the cable clamp near the top of the handle and identify the drive cable. Loosen the clamp and pull the drive cable housing down about a half inch toward the engine. Tighten clamp and try the drive. You should only have about a half inch of free play on the sliding handle. If the mower tries to go without you pushing on the handle, you tightened it too much - back off on the adjustment. Ideally the wheels will not turn if you pick up the back end with the engine running and handle returned to the top of it's travel. However, sometimes the 'right' adjustment will turn the rear wheels very slightly/slowly, not enough to move the mower. There are several other things that might be wrong with the drive, so get back after doing this check/adjustment which is routine maintenance....See MoreToro Personal Pace System Not Good For All Situations
Comments (28)'Let me know when someone designs a mower that's perfect in every situation, and I'll buy three of them!' It doesn't have to be perfect, just not aggravating most of the time. I concur 100% with the original poster - it was like he was talking about my yard and my mower. Personal Pace, Easy-Stride and Sensa-Speed all can be nightmarish in certain situations. Plus, the big point for me was you can't turn it off. Once I discovered 'Variable Speed' which is simply PP with manual bail control, I knew I had found the 'drive of my life', to coin a phrase. PP can be great under some conditions, but I don't know how many times I got enraged with mine. I came close several times to throwing it out in the street and shooting it until it caught fire. It's not about 'not liking new things', being 'set in one's ways' or not 'giving it enough time'. It's simply that PP is a marvelous drive system except under certain conditions. If you do not encounter those conditions where you mow, you may really like it. Even if you do have some of the problems, many people just aren't that bothered by them - others are....See MoreToro Personal Pace
Comments (5)I've had similar experiences with my Personal Pace movers. Sudden loss of self propelling has always been caused by the self propel cable breaking. I would suggest removing spark plug wire, tip mower on its side ( oil spout nearest ground ) have someone push down on the handle (all the way down) as if you were mowing and look at the belt. It should be very taught around both pulleys. If not then your cable may be broken or loose. Replace it if its broken - adjust it if it's loose. If it is taught you may have a gear box or other problem. Just a thought. Hope this helps....See Moretoro personal pace
Comments (1)You need a new cable. It does not attach to the wheels. The drive works by tilting back the whole rear axle ass'y. which tightens the drive belt. The drive cable works a lever attached to the axle ass'y. You shouldn't have any trouble finding that and seeing how it all hooks up....See More1saxman
