We installed one in our previous home and never noticed any odor but we're not sensitive to miniscule odors. We were very happy with our door, though. :)

You should also post on the Windows Forum, which is actually about windows and doors. There are lots of posts about ThermaTru doors there, though I am afraid the consensus is that you might do better with a door made by HomeGuard or HMI. But post there and see what they say.

I recently purchased 3 new Thermatru doors. Two entry doors and one fire rated primed door. My doors came unstained/painted and i had a local distributor prefinish the two entry doors. I believe you can order the wood lock a like's and then choose a low VOC stain? or order a paintable door and finish with low voc. here's a pick of my entry door

I have a new Thermatru door, have had it for a year. Yes it stinks! Every place I search says no, but it smells like cat urine. I went back to Lowe's to ask about it and they said they never heard of such. The smell shows up when the sunlight is strong on the front door. You have to get close to the door to smell it. The smell is also inside. Although it smells like cat urine, I do not have a cat so I know that isn't it.

This winter, we actually had a few cold days and snow (I live south of Baton Rouge, LA). We started smelling the odor again. Cleaned, mopped, sprayed with disinfectant, turned out it was the door, again. I believe the combination of the interior heat coupled with the humidity and the door off-gassing is the problem. So far, I have found no solution except to wipe down, spray with deoderizing disinfectant and hope it dries out. It isn't awfully strong, but there is an odor at the door. My daughter who lives in the front bedroom is the one who is affected the most.

The door is a beauty and keeps the heat in and cold out and vice versa in summer. It cost me enough and I just cannot replace it anytime soon.

We have a LOT of off-gassing with our fiberglass Therma-Tru door. We bought it in August 2019, and during this first winter when the sun hits it, the smell fills the entire living room, kitchen, dining room and down the hallway. It is awful and I open windows often which isn't so fun in our cold weather in central New York. Our door recieves full sun, facing south. When it is cloudy out, there isn't any problem, no smell at all. But when it's 9 am and the sun is shining, I come out of my bedroom door and can smell it immediately. On top of that I don't even have a sensitive nose so this is why it bothers me so much. I don't want to be breathing in toxicity. I am going to replace it probably with a metal door as our climate wouldn't do well with wood. If your door isn't in direct sunlight, you will not have a problem. Otherwise I love the door, it's great, warm, feels nice, wood grain, excellent. Only the off-gassing for fiberglass I wasn't aware of before purchasing.

I am so disappointed in our Therma-Tru door. it was installed in November along with a Pella storm door. No problems until now. As the weather is warming up with more sunshine the horrible chemical smell coming off the door is causing all of us to have headaches. When the sun goes down, the smell goes away. Because it was installed when it was already cold outside, we never got around to priming or painting it. I have no idea if this will help but we have to do something soon before the temperature really heats up. Lowe’s (where the door was purchased from) offered no help and bounced us to ThermaTru who also hasnt responded. I would have stuck to metal if I’d known fiberglass doors could do this ...

Just installed ThermaTru Fiberglass door last week and the smell is intense when it’s sunny. Kind of ridiculous that this isn’t addressed.

This is a very old thread, but FWIW, we installed a ThermaTru full light fiberglass front door precisely a year ago. We also used their gel stain kit. No smell ever. Now, the door gets full sun for only a few hours each morning. We are on a lake in the Blue Ridge so fairly temperate here. These things may account for differences. I just would not want everyone to rule out these beautiful doors, believing they all smell.

we installed thermatru enliten fiberglass door with factory painted finish about 14 mo ago. 2/3 lite glass and glass sidelite window. No problem. It was supplied by contractor and their vendor /not BIG BOX offering.

ThermaTru fiberglass on a south facing deck - really hot - no smell ever. Painted. 10-light (so less fiberglass) Over 1 year old. Interesting the contrasting comments here.

We have that door and when it's hot it smells and with Central Air it blows the odor while sitting on couch. My question is are we safe or is this a potential health problem?

Following I have same issue, unbearable chemical smell that actually makes me nauseous. Door was primed/painted was there suppose to be another undercoating applied?

What is interesting is that I have the same experience as mentioned above regarding smell. While sunny or very very cold, the smell is intense. But I dont have a ThermTru door. It started when I had a room painted. We are convinced that after months of research that is was bad ceiling paint. I wonder if it is the finish on the door that is causing the smell?

Lost my last post, so I will try it again. Its been three years and my door still smells! Its been an extremely wet and hot summer here in the south. Here is a picture. The morning sun (and my old dog) has taken a toll on the door. It needs refinishing. I have a matching walnut paint, used on the moulding that frames the door. I plan to clean, prep and paint it with the walnut paint and then seal it. Here’s to hoping the smell problem will be solved. Any suggestions are appreciated. Have a great fall, yall!

We purchased our fiberglass door from Lowes 3 1/2 mos ago. Gasious urine odor caused us to become sick - dizzy, with headaches - and we were forced to move from our home. After moving from home and spending over $2,000.00 for mold, radon, and Co2 tests, gasous odor still existed. Son isolated front door by sealing off area by door to living room with plastic, and there was no longer odor/gas...We had it installed by a carpenter from Home Advisor because of long wait for scheduling Lowes installation. I have found on internet that door should have been sealed and painted. Door came with no instructions, nor were we told about sealing or painting door. at time of purchase. Was your door sealed and painted? I want to know if sealing and painting door now will eliminate gasous urine odor? Many, many thanks!

I have a brand new fiberglass door from therma-tru which came to us prepainted. it gets direct sunlight and absolutely stinks. i have called a few times and just get the run aroubd that the door is fine and nothing to worry about. its very frustrating thst you pay all this money for a door that has a terrible smell from the heat

YES! Smells like cat pee. We one door installed with no smell. But it had damage from an install error. So the fix required a new door to install. Now left with a horrible smelling cat pee door. Strong smell filling the house. Weird how the first door had no smell.

Due to humidity and heat, COVID, etc., the door is still not painted, but the smell smell is less and less. i spray it with vinegar and water solution (1:1) and it helps. Therma-tru needs to address this! Do not use this brand.

Good grief - I don't have this door but we just installed a new fiberglass one in the garage. Made me have chest problems and gave me multiple bloody noses (I'm pretty sensitive). Glad to know I'm not crazy and this is a thing.. We're trying to air out the house now..
