is it warm enough to plant?
Comments (8)A friend planted limas about a week ago and they are emerging now. I think your conditions must be similar to the ones here, so I say go ahead and plant. Don't pay much attention to air temperature. It's soil temperature which is important and that depends mostly on how much sun is striking the soil. An inexpensive dial thermometer from a housewares department is useful for measuring soil temperature. Soil temperatures in the neighborhood of 80°F are optimum for beans although 70°F is OK. Second plantings work well for common bush beans. King of the Garden is a pole lima however. Limas and pole beans take longer to start bearing and bear over a more extended period. I would not expect a second planting with KOG. Jim...See MoreFinally.. Warm enough to plant tomatoes
Comments (2)I love your plant supports!! They look so pretty! It is finally warming up here. I am hardening off some plants I started indoors from seed. I hope I do not kill them. lol I also need to get some cucumbers going. I hope I am not too late :) Karen...See Moreheat pump not warm enough
Comments (13)Let's get the input temperature. If you run the house at 80 degrees and the HP if putting out 79 degrees, big problem, you must be in A/C mode. If you run the house at 60 degrees, then 79 degrees may be real good. A rise of 20+ degrees across the heat exchanger is pretty good, i.e., you're moving the right amount of air to get efficient heat transfer. I have a two speed heat pump and the heat rise is about the same in both speeds, but the air is different: 1000 cfm in low 1400 cfm in high. I use a dark room thermometer to measure air temp. I drilled a 1/4" hole in the duct just above the air handler and stick the 4" long temp sensing rod into the air flow. My air delivery ducts are insulated, the return is not. If you're running your house at 70 degrees, the air out of the HP near the heat exchanger should be around 90 degrees. I run my house around 65 degrees and get 85 degrees out of the HP....See MoreHigh humidity and warm temps bring out the best colors
Comments (6)Thanks Nancy. Things are finally going. Seems a bit later than usual but enjoying some great blooms. Some of my most reliable blooms are slow this year. JJ Divine just had its first blooms open and I haven't seen (cursory glances) a single Dwarf Singapore Pink inflo on any of the 150 tips on that plant. I might need to relocate it to more sun. Working an issue with some leaf hopper type insects. Using neem oil only because we have such a nice assortment of butterflies, fireflies, honey bees, ladybugs, and other beneficials. I found these two guys out there yesterday. So I treated only plants outside of a 5 ft. radius from them. Hopefully this will drive the leaf hoppers into a amphibious ambush. Also been moving some lizards into the patch to help. Never had to deal with this type of insect before so we will see what works....See Morehobbyartisan (Saskatoon, SK Canada, 2b)
