WANTED: What's a good lawn seed for Seattle?
Comments (1)I have had good luck with the "orange bag" (for shady areas) at McLendon's. (And, at my former and more sunny home, used their "blue bag" with good success). You may want to post this on the "Northwestern Gardening" forum for more ideas....See MoreWhen do I plant Violets in Seattle?
Comments (6)tienle... Kasper's on the right track - nice going for a Viola newbie :) Sow seeds of any hardy violet in winter and allow them to be damp and cold, preferably sub-zero, for a couple of months. For most species that will break dormancy, though sometimes the seeds may have been put into deeper dormancy which will require longer to break. In the natural cycle of things that would mean another year, but in the fridge it should just mean being patient for a few more months! Protect the sown seeds from heavy rain and vermin. If you sow thme in the fridge, look in on them now and then, and move them into a cold greenhouse or frame as soon as germination starts. If, however, they spend some time trying to grow in the dark of the fridge, and have become tall and thin and pale as a result, move them out into the cold frame just the same and with a bit of luck they should green-up and survive. In the cold frame, keep them in good light, preferably not too one-sided (else thin seedlings may topple over), but out of direct sunlight. Use sterlized seed compost or sterile tissue paper to sow them in/on. That will help reduce the chance of the seedlings being killed by damping off (fungal disease)....See MoreSeattle and Vancouver: things to do
Comments (14)A MUST visit for dinner in Vancouver is Vij's. Just the most fabulous place..no reservations and you must get there before they open and stand in line to get a seat and prepare to stay for a long time...not because it's slow, but because you won't want to leave. Seriously, I would (and have) driven 4 hours from Olympia to eat there. Even if you think Indian food isn't your favorite, it's not typical of much Indian food I've eaten and any way you slice it, it's exquisite. Vij's The ferry ride to Bainbridge is great and you can walk on/walk off and take a short walk to downtown (cute shops - great restaurants) for lunch. I'd skip the Bremerton trip myself. But if there is any way to take a ferry ride from Anacortes to Friday Harbor, you should do it. Friday Harbor is very touristy and busy in the summer, but you don't need a car and can walk on (difficult to get on the ferry with a car in the summer without a reservation and it's very expensive). You can find a decent lunch and poke around, then head back. There are whale watching tours from there, too, as well as in Canada. But the beauty is the actual ferry ride through the islands. The Canadian Ferries are wonderful, too, so a ride to anywhere is worth it, if that's a better option. eta: I think I wrote this on the other thread, but the restaurant at Chihuly Gardens is excellent - Collections Cafe - in case you find yourself at the Seattle Center needing lunch or dinner. The gardens are so wonderful at dusk, but in summer that will be very late....See MoreWhen do you top off Brussels sprouts in Seattle area or PNW
Comments (1)I don't think it's ever too cold here for sprouts. My dad used to grow them all through winter, harvesting as we needed them along the way (n.Seattle/Lake City area). If you want to maximize your harvest all at once (like for T'day dinner) then do the 3 weeks before method. And hope we have at least a couple of decent frosts before that time - the cold condenses the sugars in the sprouts and makes them sweeter rather than bitter....See Moreblfenton
