The blooms and twiggy growth pattern makes me think it is some sort of "china" rose. Where approx to you live? Do you know your climate zone? Chinas love heat, hate cold. Will bloom continuously for months and months if they are happy. Just my opinion, but if this were my rose here is what I would do: 1) Don't worry about pruning it - chinas don't need pruning, especially not at this point when it is under so much stress. If a cane is obviously completely dead, OK to take off but not necessary. 2) Weed ALL of the stuff that it not rose away from the bottom of the plant - out to at least 20". 3) WATER it well, for a couple of days. 4) Scrub off all of that white stuff (looks like some sort of scale planted and being attended by ants - yes, they do keep farm animals). Then, spray it with something that kills scale. In the middle of winter you can also spray it with a dormant spray, to keep them from coming back, but not now. 5) Put some sort of timed release rose food around the base of the rose - out to the same 20 inches - I use Osmacote. Follow the directions - water it in. 6) Put some sort of mulch around the base of the bush - 2-3 inches deep, also out to the same 20 inches. DO NOT let the mulch touch the base of the rose - keep it about 2" away. 7) Make sure you water it well at least once a week, unless you live somewhere where it rains a lot. 8) Stand back, and watch it - it should start doing better within a month. Time for some serious pruning Molly. I can't say for sure, but the whole top looks dead to me. The cinnamon colored stems are young fig branches that were frozen, they change color from green or brown to red after they die and dry out. The larger trunks might have some life left... Any dead branches should be dry by now and snap when bent, try the tops of the large ones and work your way down (you will need a pruning saw most likely). Get as much of that grapevine as you can also, but be careful, I see a fig bud in the last pic @7:00. You want to clear the dead stuff and weeds before the buds grow large because they are tender and easily damaged. If the top is all dead then more will form, pick 3-5 and rub out the rest for a nice shaped bush.

Hello- Moved into a new house in march 2015 (Seattle Area). Lawn was sodded with rye. Did great until our heat wave started in June-July-August ... tried my best to keep it watered consistently - but could not keep it lush and green. Here's a link to some pics of how it looks today. Should I just see what happens over the next few weeks - or consider thatching or fertilizing? Our temps are still pretty chilly (highs in the mid-50's; dipping to the high 30's or low 40's at night). Still a lot of rain / overcast - but starting to get more sunny days. Or, if you can't find mix like Nomen's you can use African Violet (AV) mix & Perlite, mixed 50/50%. Just plant them in slightly moist mix as mentioned above & then leave them alone, unwatered for at least a week. If the roots are brittle & crunchy, pls. remove as they're dead, otherwise they're fine & you can leave them. Bury the rooted cuttings perhaps one segment (leaf) down into the mix. Bury the others cuttings perhaps 1/2 way down a segment into the mix. I doubt the single segments will grow new plants, I wouldn't bother w/ them. You can use rocks to hold the cuttings in place if needed. I forget where you're located, but I wouldn't put these out in direct sun. I find these do better in plastic, rather than clay pots. I place several layers of newspaper in bottom of pot & then put my mix on top of that & plant whatever on top of that, keeps the mix from falling out of pot. The less you mess w/ it while it re-establishes itself the better. These plants like neglect other than some water every week to 10 days. Good luck!
