Your favorite compact clematis?

I am in the market for a couple of clematis (to replace two that have not appeared this spring).
Both will be planted under an obelisk so I want it to be compact (but climbing).

(We already have Piilu, Pink Fantasy, Tie Dye and Cezanne under obelisks on our property.)

Do you have a floriferous, vigorous (hardy) but compact clematis that you are impressed with?

Does it have to be a climber or can it be an herbaceous one? Several of my best shorter plants don't climb, but grow up the center of an obelisk without any assistance from me.

Fascination stays under 6' and blooms with deep purple bells.

Arabella also stays under 6' and has light purple flowers.

Star River is one of my best bloomers. It's another one that stays under 6'.

Look at Justa which is a paler blue with some mauvy overtones and climbs.

Thanks Barb for your expertise.

I often post too soon as I would have included that I have "Arabella" (probably *5* of them throughout our property). Just as a personal preference I prefer that the non-climbers just 'scrabble' about on the ground (i.e. w/o any support) and so that is how all our "Arabella" are planted.

I will check out the others you have mentioned.

(OT but I thought I had "Fascination" but the one I am thinking about isn't bell shaped nor purple! But it is definitely not a climber. It has reddish flowers. I wonder it is).

I dealt with Koi Gardens this past fall and those clematis are from Donohues and I was thrilled with them. They are a smaller pot - about 2 or 3 inches square, but the roots systems were tremendous on them. I got 5 or 6 this past fall that I have overwintering in pots sunken into the ground in the backyard for root development. Last spring, I ordered from Brushwood, Klems and Joy Creek. I was very happy with all of those places too, however Joy Creeks pots were bigger and they were jammed full of roots. I was thrilled with these companies as well. Daves garden has different garden vendors rated - you may want to take a look to see how the different places rate and what was said about them. Save March 28, 2006 at 2:54PM @justjill, I asked about true blue clematis when I first was bitten by the clematis bug and was told that there aren’t any true blue clematis. They all are blue-purple or periwinkle, not a true blue like a few select types of Veronicas or poppies or delphiniums. Or even the true light blue of forget-me-nots or bluets. It is now a dozen years on and I have a huge number of clematis, many of which are “blue” but in reality none are really true blue. I'm excited to see that two of my babies in the nursery are mentioned here - Venosa violacea and Princess Diana! These are ones I got from Bluestone. The only mature plant I have is Piilu in a container. So I guess for now it's my favorite! LOL! I buy clematis (and come to think of it, most plants) based on how pretty the plant is. I don't seem to have the foresight to think of where I'm going to plant it or what it would look good with. Not much artistic abilities on my part. But fortunately, I do seem to be able to grow things. Oh, and I also buy based on "is it a bargain?". Hence the two blueberrie bushes sitting in my driveway, because it turns out that Colorado soil is too alkaline for them. So I need to get some large containers for them (and more potting soil). So much for the bargain!

Favorite clematis to twine through your climbing roses?

Oh, dear! Having that stuff caught on rose bushes would be a problem. Getting it off the thorns without ruining the blossoms would be tedious. She must have used the nylon netting that is light at a feather and would easily blow around if not attached to something. I've never had any trouble with the plastic type blowing around. We used the big construction staples and staple gun to attach it to the trees. Since the chickadee incident I keep a close watch, and have never seen another bird get caught, but I'm aware they could. They would be less likely to get tangled up in the heavier gauge. I think the nylon type would be a nightmare with their little feet entrapped in it.

I figured it out....I have "Inspiration" not "Fascination"!

My Arabella scrambles, some near the ground and some into a shrub. Fascination scrambled up a shrub, not on the ground at all, and Star River stays relatively upright in the center of its obelisk.
