Newbie questions on "decorative" begonia

Hi all. I know exactly nothing about begonias, but I couldn't pass up this cute one at Easter time. The tag says it's a Rieger begonia. It was covered in flowers when I bought it. Since then, I've deadheaded the spent blooms but only a couple more have appeared at the end of the longest stems - so it just looks really leggy now. Should I pinch the stems way back too? I'd like to restore it to a bushy/mounded look with more flowers. How much sunlight should it get? (and should that be direct, or filtered?) I've had it sitting in a window where it gets indirect morning light, and afternoon sun. Lastly, I have a friend with the same variety of begonia as this one (hers is larger), but the leaves and some stems on hers are turning brown and wilting - would that be from overwatering? Any suggestions to help save it would be appreciated. Thanks!

Typically these are bought as annuals but I know some folks can keep them going year after year. Your leggy bloom stalks indicate that it is not getting enough light and is reaching for all it can find. I would think it would want very bright light but no direct midday sun.

If your friend's plant has dry brown leaves then it would need more water. If they are brown and moist then too much water. Kind of hard to say without photos and more details.

Anyway to keep your plant alive year after year do a web search on that variety and how to keep it going (I think the proper name is Hiemalis but a synonym is Elatior or Rieger but I do like Rieger much better as this is what I usually see them sold as).

Yes, Riegers can be saved and will bloom again all summer if the light is good and day length long. They don't mind being outdoors, either.

Just for clarification - the bark in the 5:1:1 mix breaks down at about 1/4 the rate of peat on a (particle) size for size basis. When you consider the larger particle size of the bark used in the 5:1:1 mix, which also slows breakdown, it's not difficult to see that the life of the 5:1:1 mix as it relates to retaining suitable structure is at LEAST 4-5 times greater than peat-based soils. You'd be far better served to press the 5:1:1 mix into subsequent years of service than a peat-based soil by a wide margin; plus, the 5:1:1 mix will probably end up being about half the price of anything you might want to use from a bag. Tuberous begonias tend to lose all their stems over winter and have very showy flowers over the summer. What you might have is a begonia coming from a rhizome instead. Many of that sort have attractive leaves and are usually nearly 'evergreen'. If you treat it as you would a succulent: protect it from frost, water sparingly over the winter - and refresh the mix when it starts into fresh growth. If you want to propagate it - take a piece from the actively growing tip of the rhizome (about two inches) and plant it as you would for the main plant. It's better to use a small pot than a big one. They resent being overpotted. Another way which can work is to take a single leaf and stem and put it in water until it begins to form a root system. I don'y have the space for much seed-raising so this is 'second-hand' info: mix the begonia seed with fine sand and sow on top of a tray of damp seed medium. Do not cover it. Do this in winter or early spring and hold the temperature between 61-66F. Light without heat and dryness - so that's probably gro-tubes or similar. A humid environment helps prevent the young seedlings from drying out. Probably sow thinly - to make it easier later on to prick out the young plants. I would suspect they would be up by early summer. It could be worth trying the germination rates for seed that is not fully mature with seed that is. Sometimes the slightly immature seed in other species will germinate more readily than the fully ripe which has prepared for a period of dormancy.

crsliz, I think there are as many ways people store their Cannas as there are Cannas. I grow most of mine in pots and I bring the pots and all in to the basement after the frost takes the leaves down. I give the soil a good washing with the hose. The Temp in the basement is between 50 -60 degrees. There is very little light. I water my pots about a 8 oz glass of water once a month, Just enough so they do not dry out. They start to sprout in March and I usually can put a good size growing plant outside at the end of May. You have to experiment and see what works for you. I just do not have time to dig up plants so any tender plants I grow are grown in pots and are used on the Patio, and Deck.

Welcome! So happy you've had a summer garden. Hope you enjoy Gardenweb as much as I do. There are a few ways to overwinter container plants, depending on the plant and also on what you want to accomplish. If you just want to see how they'll grow in your house, you can bring in the two annuals--the begonias and petunias--after making sure you've cleaned off all the dirt and insects. I put mine in a plastic drycleaner bag, spray with bug killer and leave wrapped for a day in the shade, then bring them in. You can't overwinter the chrysanthemum as it's supposed to be a perennial, which means it needs to die back this fall and spend the winter in the ground. Not in a pot. So either remove the pot and plant it, or compost it as you would a floral bouquet from your house. Many chrysanthemums don't survive even then, or look pathetic the second year. So I toss mine but sometimes my husband rescues them, plants them, and there's a little mum struggling along next year. Petunias may last a few weeks in the house but unless you've got a greenhouse, they won't do much. Begonias are a houseplant when they're not in the garden, so you may have better luck with that. It's very drippy though, shedding leaves and blossoms like crazy. If you're in love with the color, you can take a cutting and root it in water in your house. After roots form you can put it in houseplant pot and it can be a cute little windowsill plant. Of the three, I'd only bother to deal with the begonia indoors. If your goal is to have more plants in the spring, it's not worth the effort. If your goal is to not waste plants that still look pretty good, don't worry about it. Such plants are meant to beautify for the summer and go to the compost pile in the fall. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you!

I am growing both a Hiemalis and a Rieger, it is surprising how similar they look. Doing some background, both have B. socotrana (from the island of B. Socotra) in their background. What is interesting is that B. socotrana has been used so extensively in hybridizing begonias as it is a tuberous/bulbous begonia. In the late 19th century it reportedly was used in the creation of one of the original mallet canes.

Socotra, a small island off Yemen (and controlled by Yemen) has some interesting plants - the Dragon's Blood Tree, huge Adenium (Desert Rose), and several other bizarre succulent plants. It is compared with the Galapagos Islands due to its harsh climate and isolation from the mainland it is closest to.

I remember an interview published in The Begonian magazine years back ( the 80's?) with Leslie Woodriff, Calif. hybridizer and long time begonia grower. The writer reported he had a bulb of B. socotrana so large it was growing in an old-fashioned washtub.

Would love to see a photo of that! I have seen Mike F's photos of boliviensis on line and in the Begonian that is probably over 12 inches across which is very impressive!
