superficial cold damage ... just cold enough to pop a few cell walls ... individually freezing such ... but not cold enough to do substantial damage ... thats my best guess ... frankly i dont see damage on the right side ... been a long time since i reviewed al gritty mix ... but i am wondering if its tuned into trees specifically .... its good ... better than buying pre-made stuff ...... but you might think about cutting it by a third with mini bark chunks or something... trees like a cool sip of water.. and near total draining ... which means.. the pot .. before and after watering... barely changes weight .. if it gets heavy.. then it MIGHT be retaining too much water ... [but if al pops in.. i will defer to his experience regarding tree in particular] regardless... crikey.. its a maple.. most likely.. the only way to kill it.. would be to leave a black pot in full sun.. and not water it for the rest of the year ... and then it probably still wont die... lol... but it will root out the bottom.. to take care of itself ... lol.. ken

Mutant is correct. Japanese Maples are almost always grafted plants. That's how they clone the various types that have usual features or colors. They take a branch from the special tree and graft it onto a plain 'ole green ("wild") Japanese Maple tree. After the two plants have fused, they cut off any of the wild tree above the graft, leaving just the new branch, and, wal-lah!! You have a clone of the special tree! Look for a grafting scar on the trunk. Anything that grows from BELOW the graft (usually with very different leaves) should be removed, as its the rootstock plant sending up suckers. If you do not remove them, they will eventually over-power the graft. Regards, K4

Have looked around the neighborhood, and the sango kaku maples that are leafing out right now, and at local nurseries have coral red stems right up to the skinny little stems that hold the leaves, whereas yours have green. You have a red barked maple. As mentioned above, there are so many variations. When I Google search Coral Bark Maple, Sango Kaku comes up for a couple pages. I don't know if the name is trademarked. Yours isn't that one. You can easily train a leader on a japanese maple, as we did on our Crimson Queen which is 12' tall and 15' wide, which was planted from a 5 gal can 28 years ago...single trunk. -Babka
