Miele Columns vs. Sub-Zero Bi48SD Fridge/Freezer
Comments (29)Thanks Marcydc. Changing the first filter was hard because the installer used big honkin' working man muscles to tighten it so tight we needed tools to unscrew it (I had psychologist man muscles working on it, but he needed pliers for leverage). The real difficulty, however, is changing the filter, and fixing the filter code, without warming up the freezer. After my third change I've learned a few things: The book says that when the filter light first comes on it's just a warning, and when the light changes state (starts or stops blinking--can't remember which), it's time to change. Tech help told me I should change as soon as it comes on, and that the trouble I've had resetting the filter indicator comes from letting it go to the end. In that case, it has to be changed in program mode rather than customer mode. The other thing I've learned is not to even try to reset right after changing the filter. My unit won't go into customer mode if it's even a little warm, and if it loses too much cool, it won't go into program either. It's basically trying to say, "Shut the door, idiot!!!" It's easy enough to change the filter and wait a number of hours. I always set aside some ice, because you're supposed to throw away the first 24 hrs. worth, so waiting another 6-12 hours is no biggie. But what defines "hard"? For me, it's the procedure to get into customer mode or program mode. It's arcane in a way that only a German engineer could like. It's like looking for easter eggs in a computer game. I can't hold the instructions and do the routine at the same time. That's "hard"....See MoreBest Choice for Fridge/Freezer Columns
Comments (1)I have Miele and am very happy with them. Good seals, good, constant temperatures. Excellent interior arrangement (for my purposes), and I love the adjustable temperature drawers. Plus the hinge that moves out and away, the lighting, and many other features. The biggest dislike is that I can't quite seem to get the deli drawer reseated correctly after removing it for cleaning and it squeeks. And I keep pulling the end cap off one rail of the similar height ice drawer in the freezer. The boxes are the same as BSH (Thermador/Gaggenau), though the electronics are different. The BSH also have a good reputation. I don't know if the Gaggenau is worth the extra price unless you're really really into the stainless interior. I checked out the Gaggenau, especially the freezer, before the Miele came on the market. I hated the design and situation of the icemaker. It took up too much room, was centered so it could be through the door, and was too low. They might have fixed that since. I always figured I'd get SZ, but when I was looking (before their columns) I couldn't find a configuration of sizes that worked for me. A lot of people bash SubZero. I don't know if it's a backlash from real estate agents telling them that they have to have SubZero to sell their houses, or if there's really something to it. Awhile back, SZ had a lot of problems that were well publicized because they got a bad batch of ... copper? I forget ... that caused a lot of problems. There were a lot of units made before they knew they had the problem, and it took them awhile to figure out what went wrong. They made good on it, and fixed up the units for everyone who called them in, but I think there were also a lot of people who gave up and replaced, rather than getting the recall work done, and secondary owners who didn't know what was going on, and people who were trying to do their own repairs who didn't know what was happening, who were just turned way off. Another knock on SZ is that they don't leap into new tech. They plod. I would think that would make them more, rather than less, reliable. Tried and true and all of that. But some people see it as backward. I, myself, wasn't as happy with the look and feel of the new interiors on the new units that were coming in just around the time I was buying. I don't think that's a quality issue, though. If I were considering it again, I'd chat up the appliance repair people and see what they think....See More30" fridge + freezer-only columns or undercounter freezer drawers
Comments (1)I need to make the same decision. :) I do not know the cost of the same base units from Gaggenau. Perhaps someone could post them if they get them before me. I think the layout in the Gagg is better than Miele or Thermador. The UI always seems better on the Gaggenau, too (based on reading the operating guides)....See MoreSeparate fridge and separate freezer
Comments (3)I have an all fridge in the kitchen and an all freezer in the far end of the kitchen with a bunch of extra cabinets and such. I can't imagine dealing with any less space and it is only myself and my teenage son. It is the same basic Figidaire units mentioned above that are frequently combined into a "sub zero" looking double unit except mine are slightly different and not connected by the crappy trim. First I couldn't care less that someone might think they look expensive and wouldn't care about such stupidity. Second these are not made well inside and don't holdup very well. Missing lots of features, cheap plastic insides, etc. When I redo my kitchen, there seems to be a lack of quality individual units unless you spend a bunch of money. I would buy commercial but there seem to be noise issues. I would have considered GE Monogram but now that Haier, owned by the Chinese government, has bought GE appliance division, they won't get a cent from me ever....See Moresmm5525
