Growing Tomatoes

Dying leaves/newly transplanted seedlings

Hi,

My newly transplanted tomato plants (grown from seed) are dying from what might be a pest problem, but I'm not sure. Does anyone recognize these symptoms? I thought blight or septoria at first, but there is no browing or spotting, just wilting and crinkling. I did dig up -- and toss -- two june bug grubs from my soil. I'm in Queens, NY. Any help would be appreciated; if it's too late to save this batch, it's early enough for me to start over! :(

Looks like a combination of excessive nitrogen burn and wind damage. What and how much have you fed them and were they fully hardened off before transplanting? meanwhile remove all the damaged foliage to reduce stress on the plant. Those leaves will not recover.

30 feet? - well give or take a few - all over my back yard! Maybe I exaggerated a bit - but not too much. Most of my tomatoes are started in yogurt cups, put into plastic shoebox size containers. When I harden them off, they are put outside under a shade tree with another shoebox placed on top (mini-greenhouse). I realize we can grow year-round in our weather, but tomatoes, peppers, etc., still need special care when putting them outside. Bejay

Probably too much sun too soon. Maybe they were not hardened enough to withstand so much hot sun so soon after they were set out. In addition a shallow container might not be the way to go. The soil will have a tendancy to dry out too easily. Can you put them in a deeper container? If they are standing up I wouldn't worry too much about the plants not making it. Try to shade them a bit in the hottest part of the day and if you can't put them in a larger container water often. Maybe clothespin a piece of cloth to the cage for shade.

Just to follow up I believe th problem was too much water. Saved 6 out of the 12 which is ok. I only wanted 6 but when transplanting to larger pots I was able to make 12. All 12 initially were great then after a while they succumbed to the above pictur or had some shallow roots from most likely root rot that they couldn't feed themselves and in 2 instances I was able to pull them right out of the dirt and saw no roots really. Kinda like a cabbage maggot problem on a cabbage. Oh well I, more of a veggie grower but every year wife picks out flowers she wants to grow. Didn't really realize these are perennial tubers at first otherwise I would've opted for larger pots than the 4 inch ones :/

just because you buy it.. doesnt mean its the right time to plant it ... apparently your opinion that weather cooled enough .. has been soundly rejected by the plant ... lol ... in my MI ... mid to late SEPT would be prime .. and holding it in a pot for 3 weeks would be nbd ... dig a 3 to 6 inch hole.. next to the root ball planted ... AND FIND OUT IF IT NEEDS WATER ...down in the root zone .... if its dry.. put the hose on trickle for as long as it takes.. to wet the root mass planted.. as well as the surrounding soil ... see link for general planting guide.. note section one... as well as the watering section .... https://sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub yes.... it is severe stress .... if water is perfected.. it can recover ... its deciduous .. and perhaps the leaves will fall off early ... but the real issue is whether the roots can recover.. and continue to grow deep into the fall .. and if they do .. then it should releaf and be all set next year ... but watch water.. when the a/c goes back on.. and maybe even put up a screen to protect it from drying wind... the year after.. it ought to be pretty bulletproof ... live and learn.. weve all done it... and learned from our mistake .... ken ps: for that spot specifically.. a good planting time.. might have been when the a/c was shut off for the year ...

Thanks Dave -- I wouldn't have considered either of those to be factors. I have them in raised garden beds and pots. The pots did not receive any additional fertilizer, but I mixed some (couldn't have been more than half a cup) of bone meal into the garden bed.

All of them were exposed to the elements in the lead up to planting, but I probably could have taken more time with them. I had no issues with that last year and had a great crop.

Hi! :-)

I have had a lot of success with Mater Magic organic fertilizer. I never have any blossom end drop or leaf issues. I water when the first 3 inches of top soil are dry. Also, thuricide for caterpillar control. Both are OMRI approved organic. Here are some pics of my early girl three and a half weeks ago when I planted and a recent picture. If you have questions, ask away! I've been through just about everything under the sun when it comes to tomato plants! Good luck :-)

It is just some minor set back. The plants should recover, and sprout new growth. Just know it will probably take a couple of weeks before you see some minor improvement.
