Carrot leaves are drying up

Hi gardening folks,

I hope someone can help me out with my carrots. I planted carrot seedlings bought from a nursery 10 days back into self watering container (City Pickers). I now see that the leaves of many seedlings have started drying up and shriveling in the edges (pic attached). I don;t know what's causing this and how to save them.

For context, i have 2 varieties of carrots planted in City Pickers and only one is dying up like this. The soil mix for this one is 50% peat, 25% compost and 25% vermiculite/perlite, The other one with healthy carrots has all 3 ingredients in equal volume. I have potato and tomato plants near the carrots.

Could it be that the mix does not have enough aeration? Could it be a disease? SHould i separate the other plants? Appreciate any insights into this. Thanks!

Carrot transplants, correct? Unusual. Good luck. I wouldn't have thought those containers would be deep enough for carrots unless they are one of shorter "Nantes" varieties.

When I blow up the photo what I see is sun and wind burn on transplants that were not properly hardened off before transplanting. If they were in different flats it is possible one set was better harden-off than the other. You will lose some leaves but once they adjust to the full sun and wind exposure they should recover.

May I ask why the different mixes and what is the mulch you are using?

digdirt2, Thanks! Yeah, these are transplants and are baby carrots (Parmex). I know carrots don't transplant well when pulled out and replanted. But this time, I am trying something different - dipped the transplants in water to remove the soil off and separated the roots without breaking any of the root hairs and replanted. They have put on some new top growth - let's see.

I was worried if the browns indicate some sort of leaf blight. I removed the dried up leaves and so far no new ones have developed it again. So fingers crossed that it is only sunburn. The plants were outdoors in the sun in the nursery - so I assume they should be hardened off already.

The mulch I am using is fallen leaves from my yard (of a border bush that has small leaves). And the different mixes are to experiment which one is wicking better.

Thanks Dave and Howel. My father-in-law follows The Garden Master system http://thegardenmaster.com/. I got some hand me down 5 gallon bags from him but they were not holding up well so I bought what I thought were 5 gallon nursery pots on Craig's list. They turned out to be 3 gallon. He feeds his once a month but it is a special concoction he got from the system. I guess his stuff is extra potent and that 2 gallon difference is significant. I will up the foliar feeds to weekly and see if that helps. I was not aware of problems with using granular fertilizer in containers I will definitely look into that. I was leery of using a synthetic fertilizer precisely because I wanted to establish some good bacteria and was afraid synthetics would be a detriment to doing that. The rest of my veg looks good but maybe I will run into similar problems as they mature. Thanks again for the help!

I don't. I picked it up at Home Depot and it's just tagged as succulent. I repotted it when I brought it home. The medium is Miracle Gro cactus and succulent mix. I've moved it to a window with more sun. The long reach was present when I bought it.

They are probably going through a little shock because of the change of light. Continue what you normally do and they will bounce back. Place them back into filtered light for a few days and then back into the same area as you normally have them. They need to reacclimate again. Those leaves will fall off, but it's ok. My trees are having the normal yellowing of leaves due to the change in temps.. so I wouldn't worry.. make sure you water and let them dry out as you normally would. ( wet/ dry) cycle. Thank you for the input. Does the leaves on the peach tree turning yellow indicate over watering? I usually do test with my fingers before watering. The other day I put a layer of pine bark mulch on the top to keep it from drying out so fast, and it has allowed the mix to stay moist longer, but since I put the bark on top I noticed the peach leaves are now turning yellow on the bottom of the tree and if I touch the leaves they are dry and feel crunchy. I don't want to do more damage and end up killing it. Do you think I should take the layer of bark off the top?

Well I will tell you one thing, carrots are very resilient. I had my carrot greens eaten to the nub and all the greens came right back. If it's just an initial issue with hardening off, you should get new growth and it should be ok.

I think main problem with transplanting carrots is not them to die, but they form misshaped roots after that...

I don't think I would have the patients to even attempt to transplant carrots...but I guess you wouldn't have to thin them which would be a bonus.

I found some Danver Half Long pelleted carrot seed at my local seed place this spring and am looking forward to growing them this fall. I'll seed the middle rows of the bed with the pelleted seed at 3" spacing because it is more difficult to thin in the middle and use my non pelleted Bolero and Napoli seeds on the outside rows.
