This is Rainforest Sunrise new last year.

This year it emerged and opened as a rosette. No new growth at all.

This is Raucous Ruffles last year, It emerged with only one eye, but I had hopes of more pips this year.

This is Raucous Ruffles this year. Still only one pip in its third year.

It hasn't helped that landscapers stepped on emerging pips while laying mulch.

Are these weather related problems? Should I hope that the situation changes next year. I am not having additional mulch laid next year. Or should I just get rid of them and try again?

Donna, hard to tell from angle with no close-up, but I wouldn't be happy with all that mulch around the crown of RR. You may be surprised but it could send up additional pips as a result of injuries and not being familiar with your zone, I would still venture to say you could still get reflush of growth.

Do you think mulch is too close and too deep? I experienced that at my daughters yesterday...looking for pips to dig out hostas for pending move. I'd be tempted to give it more sun this year but can't vouch for sunburn...but it would get a jump start for next year.

granted, our climes are so different but I notice such vigour in the hostas that get more sun than would be normal.

RS is a freak of nature ? Probably will behave next year. Kind of cool and oh so symmetrical!

Landscapers, aka hired crew, often aren't gardeners and they can be so sloppy and uncaring about surrounding vegetation. I am sorry some of your hostas sustained damage. :(

DD looks like the rabbits have found your hosta....or you or someone else stepped on them (fess up).

" Silver Queen " The Richardsiana has in pass week took a big flop , and so not sure whats up with it , taken it back into house , hope it was just heat stroking from 100 + daze we have been in for pass couple of weeks here in nastyville , so not sure about it. Two other's unknown named ones but pretty just the same and last one I think mite be B. " Sophia Cecile " not sure. I see you have " My Special Angel " have been looking at it in the catalogs . sorry I'm so long winded.... but sure there must be something in your long list that we can work with . P.s. I wont make it to any plant swap so..... not sure how we would do this if we've a mind to ???? But thanks for your time and effort if thats the only way .

Yeah, we can't even guess without a picture. Even with, it's still just guessing because of the late date. I'm in a lower zone number than you, but my Rainforest Sunrise still looks perfect. Actually, lots of mine still look good from the mild fall temperatures. Only Rubies and Ruffles has dried up. I was still watering everyone last night.

Lovely Sherry! You have a beautiful combination of hostas and companion plants! So I think we definitely have a similarity with the exposure and moisture. My little bed faces ENE and (it's probably impossible to tell in my photo above) is somewhat sloped. Our house is a walkout, so the backyard is generally lower and moister, some places more moist than others - due to neighbors' properties, and the "lay of the land" generally. But it definitely also has drainage and there is never ever any standing water. I have soaker hoses running through this bed and some others - in case of hot/dry spells, and we run the sprinklers over the whole yard during summer, but have directed them away from this bed because it usually has more than enough moisture, and I don't want the overhead sprinkling on the hostas. Well, I'll check to see how the digging is in that bed... and if so, I'll try another hosta. What the heck, I can always move it later if it's unhappy, right? All the new bed areas that I created in the fall are staring at me too, just waiting to be planted. I can hardly wait!

Can't locate the nicer photo but I forgot my Rosedale Golden Goose. Another example of what a difference a year and more makes. Not so attractive when young at end of season sale... A year later, already displaying consistent rugosity and you can see the potential that a mature one might have. Those two upper leaves at 11 and 1 o'clock are nice examples of goose eggs so far. Wonder how different it might look planted...hmmm.

The landscapers didn't do them any favors, that's for sure! As nice as they looked when planted last year, if they were mine, I'd give them another year to come around.

I would give then a little more time, too. I thought I had lost some completely with the late frost and early season damage but many are showing a healthy recovery. I would also pull some of the mulch away from the crowns, as Jo mentioned.

RFS is a vigorous and tough little thing. My money is on it to rebound nicely for you!!
