Comments (1)I wouldn't get too hung up on ingredients. It's not a chemical formula. Granite grit is just coarse crushed granite (like cracker dust with the fine stuff washed out of it). You could substitute coarse sand. The sand should be neutral pH whereas the granite grit would be slightly acidic. Turface is fired clay which is sort of like porous rock. You could probably substitute something like perlite for that....See MoreGritty Mix ingredients
Comments (0)How much (in cubic feet or pounds) of each ingredient will result in 30 cubic feet of gritty mix? Response from Michael Larkin Garden Design: I have never made that large of a quantity. I purchase the bagged ingredients and then use a 5 gal bucket to measure. 1 bucket equals 1 part. Mix in wheelbarrow. The formula can be found on the Garden Web Forum, go to the container forum. It is called Al's Gritty Mix. If you are a member of the forum post this question and Al may reply....See MoreGritty Mix ingredients

The basic mix is equal parts of pine bark, Turface, and crushed granite. 1 part uncomposted screened pine or fir bark (1/8-1/4") 1 part screened Turface or Diatonacious Earth 1 part crushed Gran-I-Grit (grower size) or #2 cherrystone 1 Tbsp gypsum per gallon of soil CRF (if desired) Source of micro-nutrients or use a fertilizer that contains all essentials I use 1/8 -1/4 tsp Epsom salts per gallon of fertilizer solution when I fertilize (check your fertilizer - if it is soluble, it is probable it does not contain Ca or Mg....See MoreNil13 usda:10a sunset:21 LA,CA (Mount Wash.)
