Hmm... I've never tried neem oil myself. But it may work. I've been able to successfully control them mainly by handpicking at sunup. I know it may seem impossible, but diligent picking keeps the population under control and while it won't stop them from flying into your garden, it will help prevent a whole lot from breeding there. Beneficial nematodes will also keep them from breeding only it takes a few growing seasons to work completely. The other thing I do is attract insect eating birds to feed and nest. Ask your local bird expert about how to attract what -- but a bird bath is mostly all you need. Finally, garlic offends the beetles, so use garlic spray on your plants once a week until their munching season is over. I use it on my roses. The internet has several useful recipes. Try to make sure that you keep a diary of when you see the first one and when you see that they've stopped their ungodly campaign of destruction. That'll help for years to come.

Thank you so much. I wonder if I put lights out in the garden if that could chase them away? I have some flood lights. I have only found 6 bugs. Most of my garden beds are raised and do not touch the ground. It is crazy I know. But because NH has such odd weather. Sometimes super hot in April sometimes freezing in Late May. I use raised beds in a sunny location. Only two of the beds touch the ground underneath. Every thing else is in pots or wood boxes above the ground. I find for me this helps to keep weeds at bay and bugs too. My garden is also super small. I have 4 acres of land but only the time to work a tiny garden about 12 by 15. I grow flowers like Marigolds and Daisies. Daisies bring the bees. I also grow tomatos, cukes, squash, peppers (they keep mean bugs away), basil, parsley (also keep mean bugs away) mini green onions, lemon balm and cilantro. I used raised beds because it is warmer for the plants and I can mulch around the pots to keep them warm or even cover them with plastic if it is bitter cold. I really hate to use any chemicals unless I have to. The chemicals that kill these bugs also can kill earth worms. And I love Earth Worms. I am off to peek around my garden a bit more and see if I can find any more meanies. And do a little research to see what I can do or how bad the damage may become. Thanks again. bp

Don't get rid of your lillies. I have come up with a good solution to get rid of the beetles, that won't cost the earth. I went out last Sat. to buy the spray. I noticed on the 1 that 1 ingredient was cooking oil, on the other was soap. I went to the grocery store and bought veg. cooking oil and I use Sunlight dish soap. Erwigs do not like Sunlight soap, so I thought why not mix up some cooking oil with my sunlight and spray my plants. It works. I use. 1 cup cooking oil, 1/2 cup sunlight dish soap put in 1 liter spray bottle fill with water. Shake well and spray all those bugs on your lillies. Within 2 sec. the big beetles were dead. it will also kill the lauva I'm keeping an eye on the eggs to see if it kills them 2. Also I have been spraying the ground around all my lily plants. Try this and see what you think? It works for me. Good luck with your lillies. I just love mine and refuse to get rid of them.

Bayer Rose and Flower 's active ingredient is imidacloprid. It is always best to read the label on pesticides, do a little research, THEN decide if you still want to use it. The site below provides balanced information on imidacloprid. It is toxic to honeybees, earthworms, and ladybugs, all beneficials. The NH Cooperative Extension out of UNH recommends planting daylilies instead of Asiatics or Orientals or: handpicking the bugs and larvae, spraying Safer insecticidal soap daily, using neem oil, and only as a last resort, low-impact pesticides.
